![]() | The piece with the flugel solo was 'En Aranjuez Co Tu Amor' by Joaquin Rodrigo based on the theme from the 2nd movement of 'Concierto de Aranjuez' and according to the CD sleeve notes was played by Paul Hughes (Grimethorpe Colliery Band). In the movie they coloquially call it 'Orange Juice'. I remember reading somewhere that there was some legal impediment to its publication as a separate arrangement..but I'm vague on details and it may be wrong. Hope this helps. Regards Trevor (another Aussie in exile) |

| Pianissimo User | Sketches of Spain G'day Ozzie mates. Some more information about this piece - which is one of my favourites (and a frequently requested favourite of John and Leigh at the Eclipse factory: "go on Noel, play Orange Juice again"). It is originally a concerto written by the Spanish composer Rodrigo for guitar and orchestra - a beautifully evocative orchestration which paints aural pictures of a lazy, sultry night in the spanish countryside. There are countless recordings of this original orchestral work and it is well worth checking them out and adding at least one to your CD collection. However, for trumpet players and jazz fans there is really only one place to go and that is the 1959 album Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis and Gil Evans. The first track of which is Concierto De Aranjuez (Adagio) in what I consider to be the defenitive performance and arrangement of this classic work. Its great to compare and contrast the original orchestral arrangement with Gil Evans' sensetive and inspired interpretation - how many bigband arrangers have ever used castanettes with such success I wonder? The whole album is wonderful but worthy of special note is the playing of Ernie Royal and Bernie Glow in the trumpet section - the Daddies of the NY session scene at the time. I also love it because it is a big band with no saxophones! t As well as 4 trumpets and 2 trombones, there are 3 french horns, a tuba, 2 flutes, oboe, bass clarinet, bassoon, harp (but no piano) and Paul Chambers on Bass, Jimmy Cobb on drums and Elvin Jones on percussion! This album is one of a trio of collaborations between Miles and Gil including Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess which redefined the sound of the modern big band. I think this album is also noteworthy because of Miles's use of the flugelhorn - which I believe was virtually unknown as a jazz instrument at that time! Please - go and buy this album!!! However, this music is also well known to a lot of people from different sources. It forms the introduction section of the piece 'Spain' by Chick Corea - although that is sometimes omitted in some arrangements of the piece. Al Jareau also does a version of Spain - complete with the Aranjuez introduction - with a very evocative lyric. This version is also worth a listen - in fact i can no longer hear the tune without recalling the first line of the song, "Yesterday, just a photograph of yesterday". All the best, Noel.

![]() | Hi Noel, Thanks for the 'heads up'. It is a fantastically lyrical piece of music...I'll have to look for the Gill Evans/Miles work and add it to the collection. I must admit that although I greatly admire Miles's sense of 'the right note at the right time' it will be great to hear him play something other than a trumpet with a mute stuck in it. I'll look forward to it particularly as it involves flugel...my second favourite brass instrument (euphonium being no. 1) Thanks again. Regards Trevor |

![]() | 'Sketches' was one of the first CDs I ever bought. It's easy to think that the 'Concierto' is the only great piece on this album, but there are some other really great bits, especially "Solea". Well worth getting if you don't have it already. Personally, I prefer the Gil Evans arrangement to Rodrigo's original (for example - the way he orchestrates the guitar chords around the woodwind is just brilliant.) ... but maybe that's me being biased as a trumpet player. |

| New Friend | Gidday Gidday! Thanks for all the extra info on "Orange Juice" !! You wouldnt believe it...I miss one band rehearsal...and I miss everything. I turned up to a playout for our band last weekend...and what did our Director pull from our folder....Orange Juice...as he called it! Thats how he introduced it! I didnt even know we had it! So...I now have a copy of the flugel solo part. It was actually called "Rodrigo" on the sheet music...so thats why I hadnt recognised it. (Our band has literally a large room full of 150 years of collecting band music). I first heard this piece when I began playing again. (Im a comeback player). I thought, Id love to play it one day when Im good enough. Well, I have a Taylor zeus cornet coming....and this is the first thing Im going to play on it!! I cant wait! Im all practiced up! Thanks again for the "other recordings" of it. Give me something to look for, and being a guitar player too, it would be nice to hear it played on guitar....but you cant beat a good flugel horn player I reckon! And to Noel...thanks for the info. Say Gidday to Leigh for me. The Taylor cornet hasnt arrived yet...but it should in the next few days!! (The first one to hit Australia!) Leigh will know who I am! Are you at eclipse going to have any more competitions?? I missed this one...but have some great ideas! (Nothing to do with kangaroos or koalas!!) Great idea guys! Keep up the good work! Thanks again Jo

| New Friend | By the way...the flugel horn in brassed off is not a clipper tone. They came later by Hawkes. Much later. The model used by Brassed off is the Excelsior Sonorous. Ive just won one of these on ebay. Have a look if you wish. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=3733599575 Nice wrap to them. Unusual. A When it arrives....I'll let you know how the intonation is. :) If it doesnt play very well...it will make a nice wall hanging! Cheers Jo

| New Friend | Hi Brass Buddies...well the flugel has arrived...with a story attached. When I received it...the first thing I did was blow into it. No air got thru. So...inspect the valves. They might be in the wrong way. It was listed on ebay as valves and slides good. Well, to cut a long story short...the first valve is about and inch shorter than the other two! OOPS Wrong valve! Now you try finding a valve for an instrument which there is usually only one of in a band! Not to mention it is 100 years old and an unusual wrap. It is not turning out to be an easy job. But I have one friend with a slightly older...but identical flugel horn. And his is a player! And...just as a coincidence...both flugels are sitting in the same repairers workshop at the moment. This means I have a template for a first valve...if anyone knows of anyone who can make me a valve. Hope thats not too confusing...! (It confused me!). And Trevor...Gidday! Im still getting used to the big blow of the Taylor zeus. Its a beautiful cornet...and I think this is my lifetime horn! One to keep for life. Im sooooo happy with it. Im afraid I havent touched my other instruments much lately. :o Did you make it to the Roger Webster concert Tuesday night?? Great Gig! Pity Steve was sick...he did so much work for the concert. Not just pracitcing, but behind the scenes stuff too. The logisitics. The comentator mentioned him and thanked him in his absence. How was the solo cornet player....One practice!! What sight reading.....Im jealous..:) I met Roger Webster at the end of the concert...and got him to sign a program. Hes a very pleasant man to talk to. He spoke to me and my son for about 10 minutes. Anyway Trev...hope you made it to the concert...it was really a top night! Jo
