Re: What is a good cheap pocket trumpet?

I have an EP4071 Weril Pocket Trumpet (Brazillian) - I wanted to steer clear of the Chinese ones, and the expensive stuff is just out of my league for the purpose.

Pros: - Generally very good finish overall, solid feel, good appearance, nice tone.

Cons: - Fine detail imperfection - a small amount of lacquer "wicking" between two very closely adjacent tubes - not easily seen. Valve action nice but not as good as my Getzen - the valves still have had little run in time yet, but from and engineering perspective, I’m rather inclined to gently lap them with some toothpaste.

General Comment: -This is a great little horn - the small bell 3.62mm minimises the volume, but not so that you notice much. I purchased this trumpet to practice when travelling - I pack the Weril and a Harmon bubble mute and my hotel room becomes my stage, the Weril takes my 3C mouthpiece. The finish is unusual in that the brass has been sand blasted, plated to a 24ct gold frosted finish and then clear lacquered, highlights are in unfrosted gold/lacquered finish. Some say it looks a little like plastic until they handle and play the instrument. (Other finishes are more readily available).

These little horns generally have about the same weight as a standard trumpet – it’s just compressed into a smaller space – bit of a surprise really. If you have big hands, you may have trouble getting comfortable with a pocket trumpet; there’s not much to wrap your fingers around. On the whole, a great little trumpet. Cost new was AUD$610 in Melbourne, Australia.

The Weril comes in a very solid little case about 11" (L) x 8''(H) x 6"(D) - which actually fits in a legal sized carry-on-bag - and I have never had Airport Security reject it (I travel a lot). They come standard with the Weril version of a Bach 7C, a bottle of Weril valve oil, and a cleaning rod (all of which are accomodated in the case - I don't travel with the cleaning rod though). I hope this helps.

cobragamer,

I have found an image of the Weril Pocket Trumpet (an example of the straight lacquered version - shows lack of "trigger" on the third valve slide and lever water keys.

Re: What is a good cheap pocket trumpet?

In my avatar, you will see me playing the Monique pocket trumpet on the shores of Cambrils, (Barcelona) Spain. This horn cost $150.00 USD three years ago, and is not something I would perform on without modifying the sound with mute or plunger. That said, I had a ball playing at the Bar Dakkar in Cambrils with a couple of Guitarists. Never a legit horn, but a conversation starter for sure. Pulled up next to a cute blond in a porsche boxter once and played "I'm in the Mood for Love", which caused her to reply "well, that's a first". :>)

Re: What is a good cheap pocket trumpet?

I bought a Cecilio, mistake. It sounded nice, but I think where I got it, it was sitting somewhere collecting rust. The valves stuck. I bought a Selman from an ebay store. This was one of the few pocket trumpets that had monel valves. I am so happy with this trumpet. It plays very nice and it's easy on the wallet. I think cause of pocket trumpets being so small, that alot of spit builds up and sometimes the valves get slow. Just empty the spit alot and you should be ok. I tried a Jean Baptiste and it had alot of back pressure. I'm sure there are better ones, but, I guess it depends on how much you are willing to spend. Good luck. There were alot of replies that had good info.

Re: What is a good cheap pocket trumpet?

I bought a Jupiter pocket trumpet in 1990. The valves are great, it is well in tune with itself and sounds fine. Jupiter have apparently upped their game in terms of quality so the new ones have to be at least as good as this one.

Re: What is a good cheap pocket trumpet?

I'd have to say Pocket Max best overall value. Excellent valves, great sound in a pocket trumpet.
