Re: What is your main horn?

I play a Zeus Olympus (a large bore) for 90% of my work. It's a stock model but it does have the reversed leadpipe.. not sure if that is considered a mod since it was a stock model.

Re: What is your main horn?

Bach 37 in silver, serial 385xxx (1989). Bought it from a guy in concert band three years ago. Knew it was mine the moment I played it. Valve alignment and the third valve slide vented by Jim Becker at Osmun soon after buying it.

Several years ago, as a comeback player going through the more-money-than-chops phase, I tried out a lot of trumpets, but after getting the Bach, the only other one I've kept is the Kanstul Besson Brevete that Tom Williams played on the Heath Brothers' Jazz Family. He had stripped that horn down to raw brass, taken off the spit valves, moved a brace, and put on a different finger hook. Since buying it, I've had the valves replated and aligned, the third valve slide vented, and installed a spit valve on the tuning slide. I think all those changes must reduce the resale value -- and I bought it for short money -- but when it plays and sounds great, who cares?

Last edited by dales : 07-16-2007 at 09:10 PM. Reason: a missing word, and how could I forget the third valve slide venting?

Re: What is your main horn?

"Kanstul" 1500 with copper bell - mostly for all my jazz work
"66" Bach Strad model 37 - now silver plated for legit playing
"Jupiter" flugal

The Kanstul opens up nicely in the upper register
The Bach has wonderful valves and a beautiful dark sound

Re: What is your main horn?

I don't know what you all think; but, I know a lot of use have a Bach Strad 37, whether it's our main horn or not, right?
I'd really like to see the horns listed from the "Other" list. Wouldn't that be more interesting? Of course, I'm reading everybody's post, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Re: What is your main horn?

Hey, Where's the Martin players? Someone must play a Committee or a Handcraft. They are certainly great horns...
