Here's a name many have seen for years posting on TH.

Nicholas Dyson a former partner in ATM - About the Music Jazz club in Seattle. Now a band member of the new cruise ship Mariner of the Seas - Royal Caribean Cruise Line plays a Calicchio. Man can he play........

his offship adventures sound pretty fun too. :)

TRIVIA >>> SONNY & CHER TV SHOW

I know that when you watched the show and saw the band on tv, they weren't really playing (I don't think). Those things were pre-recorded & what you "saw" was sidelined. Sometimes the guys that accully "played" weren't even seen ... they had another session to get to when the on air taping was done.

Larry ... you're out there so please "do" correct me if I'm wrong!

As far as who played lead on that show ... wasn't it John Audino?

Michael

Hi Mike

Because Sonny and Cher was geared toward a younger crowd and it was the early 70's Chuck Findley could play the hell out of the book but with the beard and long hair , looked the part.

You are right, most of the shows did pre-record but Chuck like the " high visibility " of the show and the " scene " plus Musicians union out here has a great scale to sideline, so he did as many as he could with guys like Ollie Mitchell, Bobby Shew, Jay Diversa, Denny Christianson, to name a few.

Also the guy who toured with Bette Midler in that era and was in the movie " The Rose " with her. Very fine player did alot of Rock tours when horn sections were in (the good old days). Maybe someone can help me out with the name. If anyone has “The Rose” soundtrack album, yes, I said album, look on the back and tell who he was.
Bobby Shaw was also on that album.

If need be, emphasize in your post that it really “Belongs to my wife”
I think I'll do a Barnes and Noble search right now.

Also, on Sonny and Cher, from time to time, they played and sang live because of a limited time frame of the show and no time to pre-record.
Chuck really liked those - Double Scale

2 other players I forgot to mention:

Elton John / Robbie Williams trumpet player - Paul Spong
Woody Herman / Buddy Rich trumpeter - Wayne Naus ( did he also play with Maynard ? )

Also, Clark Terry played a 1s / 9 for a great while.

And I found in the register book an answer to my earlier question, Kenny Faulk - Miami pro who toured with Buddy Rich and now records and tours with the Bee Gee's.

He plays and 1s/2s (a #2 leadpipe cut higher on the mandrel for a smaller opening) bought in 1988

Being involved in the Hollywood Shop at that time, I remember Kenny coming it and having a special “S” cut leadpipe made for his new trumpet. He liked to feel the air column “blowing against a wall “when he played.

John Harner of Kenton's " Send in the Clowns " famous lead trumpet solo fame and Bobby Findley who was the other trumpet player in the Tijuana Brass with Herb Alpert and also played on the " Gong Show " all those years also played the 1s/2s combination.

Hi All,

Wow, someone just called me on the phone and gave me his name.

His name is Rich Cooper , and boy, could he play. He did alot of sessions in this town in the Rock and Roll heyday.

You'd be surprised who's lurking on this site now.

The Gong Show

Larry,

Jay Daversa was one of the trpt players on "The Gong Show". Jay was on of the "first call guys" for a good number of years. He and Chuck (Findley) were, and are, tight.

Theme from "The Waltons" ... that's Jay. He also did Fantasy Island, Donny & Marie, and so many other tv show & movies you don't have enough fingers to coun't them all.

Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing the "hair & beard" on those shows.

Aside from Jack Sheldon ... who else did "The Merv Griffin Show"? Many times I saw 'two' trumpets.

Triva Question: Who were the trumpets for the Carol Burnett Show?

Michael

Hi Mike,

thanks for the kind words , your check is in the mail as we promised.

Merv Griffen show : Bill Berry , Jack Sheldon ( 2 trumpets ) - Ray Trisari , Bill Berry , Jack Sheldon ( 3 trumpets )

Famous quote by Jack Sheldon

Jack is having a hard time on some parts at rehearsal before the show airs and Mort Lindsey , the director , asked him if he thought he'd be OK by show time.

Jack - " If I could play these parts, do you think I'd be in this band ? "

Carol Burnett Show : Warren Luening , Tony Terran, Jack Laughbach - Theme played by Warren Luening on lead trumpet. These guys were the originals, but the show had many subs over the years plus started in New York with the Harry Zimmerman Orchestra ( 68'-71' ) and thne came to LA with the Peter Matz Orchestra ( 71'-79' )

Larry

PS: I can remember how upset I was when that " Conn Director " endorsement fell thru. :P

Carol Burnett Show

Larry .... correct!

One of my friends here in FL, John Bello, did the show for a little while, as did Ray Triscari & Chuck (Findley). But you are Correct, Warren Leuning was the designated lead trumpet player on that show.

Another Triva Question: Who played the short trumpet solo on the Theme to Bob Newhart Show?

Hi all,

For those of you that don't recognize the name Johnny Bello - he happended to play lead trumpet for Judy Garland ( you know, Liza's mom ) for roughly 20 years and is playing fantastic lead trpt in her famous " Live at Carnegie Hall " comeback concert "

I happened to buy his Calicchio from him when he retired from his work in New York and Los Angeles and moved to Florida ( 1s/7 - circa 1969 - silver ) and he told me that he and the other trumpet player actually traded every 2 BARS on Judy's outgoing overture which of course happened to be " Over the Rainbow ".

He told me she took it so extremely slow , it was all they could do to get thru the 2 bars at the full volume they had to play it at. He said ' it felt like your 2 bars lasted a life time and the other guys was never long enough "

Anyway I've know of 2 player credited with the Bob Newhart theme, both names should be known by all, but I'd like to see some other forum members take a try - for you younger guys and gals , the show was on in the late 70's (Yeah, ancient history time. ) and it had a beautiful trumpet solo in it.

The actual player was Buddy Childers who joined the Stan Kenton band when he was 19 and his mother actually traveled with the band to keep an eye on her son.

No, it was not Jackie Vernon. ( if you know who he is, you are old )

Larry

Hey, TM this trumpet trivia stuff is fun - how bought a trumpet trivia section. Maybe MPM could moderate it.

Thanks for the thought Larry, but I'll need to decline the moderator idea. I really like participating, however a "moderator" role isn't really for me.

BTW ... I don't know who played the "Newhart" solo ... but I'll look forward to the answer, who ever posts it.

John Bello, presently playing on an old Benge that he had KANSTUL gold plate earlier this year. He liked the job(s) they did on my Scodwells. And, the gold really helps to focus the core of a very light horn.

Regards Michael

PS ... I must be old, I know the name, Jackie Vernon

Sonny and Cher Show

The trumpet section was Johnny Audino, Ray Triscari and a young Chuck Findley. I'm Ray Triscari's nephew...as a kid he brought me many times to the show....I believe they all passed the book around.
