The reason the bigger Monette trumpets sometimes sound dull is the way they are recorded.
Mine sounds horrible when I play it in the house, but when I play it in a concert hall it sounds amazing.
If you mic them up too closely they can sound dull.

I didn't think my B993 sounded horrible in the house, but you notice the effect of the big bell, extra weight etc. more clearly in a bigger room. That's what bothers me a bit about these kind of horns, the same goes for the heavy Taylors, etc. It's hard to blend with standard trumpets because what you hear is not what the public gets. It sticks out and it's harder to control what I'm exactly doing. As a soloist that's no problem offcourse.

That's probably one of the reasons why Dave started making lighter horns (again) like the Prana 1 and XLT.
