![]() | Let's put it this way, just because Monette makes a Bb or C that some ppl like, doesn't mean that each of the other keys of horns are great. Even though I enjoy the Bb horns, I think many people would be fool-hardy to purchase a Monette Piccolo. Just buy a Kanstul, Schilke, or hell, even buy a getzen. Wilmer was spot-on when he said it all has to do with sound concept. If that's what you are reaching for, then try one. Even if it's not something you have an interest in, then don't complain about what they do. Don't bitch 'til U tried it. -efwd |

![]() | There are many teachers, including Bill Adam, that want you to hear a sound in your head before you play it. Back to Monettes. I personally have never played a Monette that I've liked but I have only played two of them. So, I am sure if I tried several different combinations I would find one I liked. I have heard Wynton sound great on his Monette. It may have been just that recording you didn't like. David Monette has a lot of people who believe in and play his products. I cannot justify paying #5,000 + for his horn or even the new Severinsen horn. For those people who can afford it and get the set-up that works them great! There are many horns out there that work for some people and not for others. Mike

![]() | Ummm... I just got Nicholas Payton's "Gumbo ...(Whatever it is.)", and if you think he doesn't have a "big, fat sound", I think you'd better: Buy this album. Buy a better stereo. Clean your ears. Trim you ear-hair. Stop talking s*** about a great player. --Kevin P.S. Different strokes for different folks. |

![]() | He was playing a monette at the time of the gumbo album. Sounds real good! He also plays a monette on fingerpaintings....and sounds pretty bad. the low register fuzzes out. I saw him live last year and he was playing the Conn V1. He sounded amazing on that horn! A-mazing! |

![]() | Also, I have played the monette horns and heard several guys play them live in concerts. To me, the sound of the monette is furry! I think this added fur confuses or convinces the listener to thinking the sound is more complex, dark and full. I would rather hear a crisp, clean, brilliantly colorful sound without all the added fur. This is how I would describe Nic Paytons sound on the V1. |

![]() | i went and listened to the Gumbo tracks and no, i don't find the sound fat or thick. sounds like any good guy on a trumpet to me. the Monette players do not impress me. my reference for fat sound is Woody Shaw with Horace Silver, say the African Queen solo. also I've heard guys in big bands with really fat sound. Monette talks about fat, thick sound in his catalog. i just don't hear it in the players. to my ears, it's a scam.

![]() | I agree with you James. I don't think the monette horns are bad. They might even be great horns for some people. I just do not believe that they are as magical as Dave advertises them to be. I have to admit tho, there were several years that I believed the Monettes were something more than just a trumpet. I would look at the pictures and they just looked better to me....and I could imagine how much better I would sound on that horn. Almost as if I had been hypnotized by Mr. Monette and his horns. He IS a marketing genius. Just as with almost anything....the more something costs the better it should be! right? Probably not....in many cases. How can a trumpet cost $20,000? How? Is it that much better than the 5,000 model he offers? just more metal from what i can tell......so, the price range is just too large. looks kinda like a scam. |
