![]() | Purchased a (lacquer) shotblast finish Xeno for my son a couple of months ago. After testing a mountain of horns, the Xeno seemed to be the best fit for him. I caved and purchased the shotblast finish because my son thought it was 'cool' - I hope that 'cool' results in longer practice sessions. Anyway, (all things being equal) this particular finish does appear to have a slightly darker sound, but no indication that the finish improves range. My take on the horn? ........it does look cool. Regards. |

![]() | leadpipes To clarify, The Xeno, without the 'shotblast' finish, is available in both a straight leadpipe and reverse leadpipe configuration. The straight pipe has the double main tuning slide braces, similar to a Bach. The 'shotblast' is only available in the reverse configuration, with only the single brace on the main tuning slide. joey |

![]() | As you can see in my post, I stated I had been told the shotblast helps notes" slot better" in the upper range. Not add range. All a finish will do is change the weight and resonance of the material. I would be interested to hear if anyone has done a scratch gold finish on a Xeno and how it effected the playing characteristics |

![]() | My trumpet teacher just had two Xenos on consignment, one was the polished silver and the other was the brushed silver finish. I played both of them on different days, but niether one in the upper register (up to A). I felt the polished silver slotted better for me. However, he bought the brushed finish, FWIW.

![]() | [quote="miles71"]I play a silver plate 8335RGS. I have been told the shotblast finish makes the horn slot better in the upper register. After all, its just laquer they "shot" with glass beads isnt it? quote] The shotblast finish is applied to the raw brass before lacquering. I can't imagine why the finish would change the slotting in the horn.

![]() | I can't speak from experience but look at what Yamaha wrote... http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/...3DNEWS,00.html Second paragraph... Quote:
I can see a finish like that affecting the sound, response less so. But wouldn't changing the entire outside of a horn affect the way it plays?

![]() | I just got the same horn a few months ago. For how I play it seemed like a different choice in tone color from standard laquer or silver. For me the horn played darker than silver, and less dead or dull like sounding standard laquer. I used to play with a little more brightness than I wanted and this horn just evened out my sound perfectly. Also, it slots like no other, and I use it for everything I do. At the University of Northern Colorado I use it for Salsa combo, jazz combo, Lead playing, Chamber music, and solo literature and it sounds very appropriate for each of them. (when I use the right size mouthpiece for the job The finish didn't add range, but the heavy construction of horn seemed to help the notes up there slot better. I put my arturo horn away for good, even for lead and latin, which I wasn't expecting to do. hope that gives people a better idea maybe. Mario
