Ambassador Basic tuning issue

I have a 73 Ambassador cornet I got a few months ago and in excellent condition. I like to play it for it's sound and ease of playing. However, the horn will not tune to concert Bb on a tuner, unless the main tuning slide is pushed in to a hair'sbreath gap from all the way. The other slides are in and it has an adjustalbe 3rd valve ring. I use a couple of Bach's, a Jet Tone Al Hirt, or even the OE of my 53 Roth, but it is still the same. Plays in tune, but I was wondering if any one had similar experiences or ideas.
My other cornets and trumpets don't have that situation.

Thanks!

Re: Ambassador Basic tuning issue

I just tried my 1963 Ambassador cornet with the Olds 7C that I got from you and find it basically in tune throughout the scale until I get above the A above the staff, where it is about 15 cents sharp. The common trouble notes that are sharp on most trumpets are also sharp on this one, requiring that I use the slide ring on the third valve slide. The tuning Bb is spot on once the little horn is warmed up with the tuning slide about 1/2" out from fully closed. With my Bach mouthpieces it is slightly sharper and I have to pull the tuning slide out another 1/8". I am more than pleased with mine, which I used in concert band practice this morning.

Re: Ambassador Basic tuning issue

Hey Lou, thanks for your report on yours. Glad it is working well and the tuning is controllable. A responder on TH said he had one that did as mine did and he found a valve badly mis-aligned, which caused the problem. I looked at my valves and they all look the same and it plays fine, no hint of mis-alignment. No big deal anyway.

I suppose that I should state here that upon arrival my little horn had overly thick new ring felts in the valve top caps, which threw the horn out of tune and made it stuffy. I replaced these with neoprene 'o' rings that I glued into place with slide grease. When I got done with this little project, the alignment was vertically perfect and the little thing just 'lit right up'.
