I've passed it to my young son, but every once in a while, I pick it up to find that sound again. What an underrated horn.

I purchased a new 700S in 2000, suggested to me at the time as the best value for money trumpet available - cost US$595. What a great horn, brilliant valves, good finish but the shiney silver plate takes a lot care to keep it looking nice. I actually prefer the frosted finish of my 1955 Boosey and Hawkes Regent MkII - although it pales into insignificance in comparison musically.

Twelve months ago a Getzen Eterna 900 S/No SK41316 came up on eBay for US$900 and looked too good to be true - it was in brilliant condition, valves not worn at all, lacquer in good nick, and absolutley no dings - I probably paid too much - but this is a kind of magic for me, and I had a "spare" US$900 sitting around waiting to be spent on a new stove anyhow. I asked lots of questions and bought it anyhow - this was a lacquered trumpet where I had been used to silver plated horns and I am quite blown away (excuse the pun) with this trumpet, it seems lighter somehow, and the sound comes back from the bell to the player much more than the 700S - I have moved forward considerably since buying this instrument - and I love the tone, the valve action is just too good. It showed me how good the 700S is though - I reckon not an intermediate horn but a semi-professional trumpet. My tutor played one professionally for 18 years.

So, bottom line, a 1983 Eterna 900 can cost as much as US$900.
