But then there is this summer-gig in the amusement-park in town....!

3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 marching baritones, 1 sousaphone, 1drums+ 1perc. walking around in the park playing various pop/rock/jazz-stuff. (EWF, Sevie Wonder, etc.)

Let me tell you: NO gig is as hard work as this!!!!

3 hours of extreme dynamics and register kind of tells you if you have the right gear or not!! ( or lip for that matter....)

I've noticed that the 26 bell horn has a very nice sound, full of overtones.

The 37 bell horn also, but maybe a little brighter.

I've mostly played Bachs in my life, looking somewhat dumbfounded at comercial players talking about Olds, Kings and to some extent Benges.

So many players can't be wrong, though!!

So, what am I looking for?

NOT a horn that will do the job for me-there aren't any!

But maybe something that makes me come home to my my wife after the gig, kiss her, and actually FEEL IT!!!
Are you running around Liseberg?

What you are experiencing is what the circus guys have had also for many years. I did this for a summer. They got a lot of notes per dollar paid.........

Re: If I were to look for a soaring vintage lead-trumpet....

The bell on the high range Olds reminds me of my Benge 2xp. The 2xp is an extremely bright horn. Might be the horn one would consider for a lead or Broadway type sound.

I just got a mint CG Benge (Los Angeles), it is the .464 large bore that Gordon liked....killer lead and all-around horn!

If I'm not mistaken, CG Benges are .468 bore, with a smaller .464 bell tail from the valve section.

This particular gig is actually well paid, and sure-they DO get their moneys worth!!

Nice thing to do as a change from my normal 100 bars rest-tadaaaa!-100 bars rest!
As for running, NONE of the guys are in any condition to run and play!!! :)

Just took my first notes after 3 weeks off the horn. Nice to get back into shape, but I have to say it has ben VERY nice to be able to spend whole days with my family instead of a few hours in the basement every day! Ah well, the season is about to start....

Re: If I were to look for a soaring vintage lead-trumpet....

Hello, everyone,
If you like a lightweight horn, buy yourself a Los Angeles Olds Special, preferably a pre-'52. I've got a near-mint '47, that is about as light as you get. I personally don't use it for lead work, I use the Xeno for that, but it's an awesome jazz horn when I play second.

good luck

I have a vintage ad for the Buescher 400, endorsed by a screamer guy, Al Killian.

I bet many horns will scream if you're a screamer guy.
