Info on a H. B. Jay Co. Cornet

Hello everybody!!

I just inherited from my late grandmother an H. B. Jay Co. cornet. It is all tarnished with one small dent on the crest. I believe it is in the original case. I am looking for info and to also know the history of this cornet. My grandmother loved her horn so I want to put pride in restoring it in her name. I think the serial number # is 5843. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Chad

A few pics might help the identification process.

Thanks Dale for the links. Would you happen to know how to go about finding the approximate year it was produced? Nobody really knew she even played this cornet. They knew she had a horn that she thought fondly of, but never opened the case to look at it. So when I opened it, it was the fist time it seen the light in over what I am guessing 40+ years.

Hi,

Nice engraving!

I'm a history buff, but the cornet would look sharp restored in silverplate.

Best wishes!

Hi, Dale,

Any information on the "telescoping tuning slide" mechanism?

Best wishes!

Re: Info on a H. B. Jay Co. Cornet

Sorry guys - I don't really know anything about Harry Jay instruments other than what I've read on those links. Do an exhaustive internet search and you're bound to find more. Maybe someone else on this forum will chime in with more info. From what I read, there's no serial #/date list available (although some of the examples shown on various sites are dated). An interesting instrument - good luck!

Looks like a "Columbia" model, circa 1920:

Try contacting Nick DeCarlis at the above site -- he seems to have managed to date his H. B. Jay cornets.
