So if you start to play that cornet and you suddenly feel something or someone chewing on your tongue, it is not Pamela Anderson

Re: Looking for a good cornet

It's been refreshing hearing all the different ideas coming from this post. Thank you.
I would like to add another request. What are your thoughts about bore size? Do you think it really matters? And if so, why?

I have experience with 3 bore sizes: .460 and .468 and .485.

The .460 is easy to play but it can be difficult to get a rich tone.

The .485 gives a rich tone but endurance can suffer a little.

The .468 gives the richest tone with the least effort.

The best-sounding cornets I have tried were the professional-level Holton C103 and the student-level Holton C603 (the C602 and the C605 are not nearly as good).
The C103 was a .468 and the C603 was a .465.

But it really depends on what tone you are looking for, what range you are looking for, what type of music you will be playing.

BTW, I am suddenly curious if Dale Proctor's ornately-engraved Bach 184 is the .459 or the .468 model?

Re: Looking for a good cornet

I am on the soloist cornet or "front line" with the brass band. I would like to maintain a full sound but still be able to play in the upper range when needed.

Getzen makes a nice cornet. Check out the Eterna 800 series.

It's what Bach classifies as a large bore (L), but it's a .462 - I think a .468 is an XL bore and a .459 is a ML bore in Bach lingo.

Re: Looking for a good cornet

The new Jupiter 1220RL Tribune is a super cornet. If I was looking to buy something new this would be a top contender. The price is right-- Chuck Levin's Washington Music sells them for about $995. Worth twice that.

My personal cornet is a Bach long model ML. It's nice too!
