Cool horn. Wanna trade ?
A trade might be an alternative. :) We live in Sweden however.

As this trumpet was branded B&F by themselves and sold in Europe I guess there was no need for a country sign. All those stenciled B&F instruments which were sold in America had to be marked with a "made in xxx" to follow American laws.

As I have mailed Daniel before (he found my website and mailed me today) I wonder if this one is from the later part of the 30's? The octagonal design was very much Anton Riedl (ARIGRA), I believe, but he gave up his business in 1936. Maybe B&F bought the tools to make the octagonal bell from him when he retired? Or just bought his spare parts and then did put them together but with a new engraving?

Another thing that guides me to the later part is the spit valve mechanism. Look at it! It is not the traditional old spit valves which all other B&F trumpets I have seen have had.

I wonder if Olds was the first one to use this design? If so, B&F must have copied them and I guess that is more probable later in the 30's.

Do you have any idea what the "Paris" on the bell means? Could this have been one of the stencils they made for Gautier?

BTW, the Amati site has almost nothing, even in Czech. Unless I missed it, which is possible. Also, "site:cz" at Google provided no help - do you know a good place to go for info on the old manufacturers in Kraslice?

Re: Mystery trumpet with lugnut-like shaped bell

I am not familiar with this B&F trumpet but I did have an oportunity to play another octagonal bell trumpet. It was made by Vickers and was called the " Octagon" model. Not very creative of the marketing department but the horn played well but did have a muffled sound. I thought the rigidity of the angles where they were bent dampened the sound some. I saw a Vickers Octagon sell on eBay last year for about $450.00 if I remember.

Re: Mystery trumpet with lugnut-like shaped bell

Hi,

How does the horn sound compared to others?

Is it easy to play?

Brilliant or mellow sound?

Best wishes,

Lloyd

They could make a bugle with a five-sided bell and call it the Pentagon.

I believe "Paris" only is the model name, as in "the Bohland & Fuchs Paris model with the fantastic octagonal design" if talking marketing language. Since this one has this big B&F sign on the bell I guess it is not made for any other company. B&F sold instruments under their own brand too (here in Europe) and those use to look like this one engraving-wise.

Nope, I know no nice place with information. I guess no one really knows enough yet . Some info can be found on the various Horn-u-copia threads but it is pretty basic.

I have wondered, were they really made by Vickers? I saw that one on ebay too and I thought it looked very much like those ARIGRA so I wondered if it was a stencil?
