Natural/Baroque Trumpet

Ok,
For those of you who know me, I am a jazz cat. Put me in a big band, throw some DHC's my way and I'm good to go. On the flipside, classical/legit music (while great stuff) is just not my bread and butter, even though I have to do it. My idea of a good time is not sitting there for 60 measures of rest in a slow four to play two notes and listen to the strings practice straching their bows. Now, I'm currently in a Baroque performance practice class and we are talking about ornamentations, etc. I have never played a natural trumpet until this afternoon... All I can say is, y'all gotta try it. It was a blast. Of course I got to play the clarino parts! Ha, one because I had the chops, and two because the teacher couldn't get the fingerings through my thick head so everything up there is all lip anyways, lol!! HAHA.
So my question is, any decent (preferrably not "academia" styled) reading out there on the Baraoque/Natural trumpet and performance practice? Anyway to obtain my own trumpet without spending an arm and a leg. I know some people build their own... I'm not that into it... yet. Thanks.

Re: Natural/Baroque Trumpet

Hi Bear:

I just got myself a fanfare to get my feet wet in natural trumpet playing. A real natural trumpet was too expensive for me so I opted for the less expensive fanfare (probably with inferior tone quality).

I got myself the Edward Tarr book: "The Art of Baroque Trumpet Playing". It is a 3 volume book. I only got Vol 1 (because I am not good enough to make it ever to vol 2 and 3). It explains everything well except the use of the vent holes which is not covered. But the book has good exercises and excerpts from historic trumpet methods. You may want to give it a try.

Regards,

Harald

Re: Natural/Baroque Trumpet

Hey Bear,
I love playing baroque trumpet... every day is a reward... anyhow - important books to read:

The Tarr books are great -- But read these classics... literally classic - they're hundreds of years old:

Quantz : How to play the Traverse Flute -- I'm sure you're going to talk about this in your class... EVERY performance practice class should. It talks about more than just flute... it talks about everything music - read it - you will love it.

Bendinelli - The Complete Art of Trumpeting... you can buy this for 7 bucks at robert king.

Fantini - Treatise of 1638

Altenburg - The Trumpet and Kettledrummer's art.

I Believe Ed Tarr has translated all of these... For someone who has now become rather proficient on the instrument, I would say reading these things made me a much more responsible player/musician.

As far as finding a cheap horn - there are no good cheap baroque trumpets. See if your school has one hidden away... a lot of schools do and don't realize it. Also someone in the area might let you borrow one. My first horn was a loaner - it was a meinl lauber 1 hole. It was designed to play in A=440 which bugged the hell out of any early music ears that listened to me at first. Since Then I got a Naumann and amazingly as I got a better horn - I got MUCH better at playing the stuff.
