Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

About 10 years ago I purchased a old B&S trumpet in a pawn shop. It is a 148347 serial number which is on the leadpipe by the mouthpiece receiver which I find kinda unusual. I know the horn is very very old. There are no markings on the valve casings other than a D with a 92 stamped under it. The bell has the B&S wreath with B&S in the center of the wreath and markneukirchen-klingenthal stamped under the B&S. The horn is in decent shape and I am wondering if it is worth restoring or not. I wouldn't want to restore a student model or anything but the only info on the net I can find is that B&S and Hoyer were the top of the line models followed by Weltklang and Wolfram? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Re: Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

How does it play?

Can you post some pictures?

I would say a good cleaning and general service would be worthwhile at least.

If you are having such a difficult time making up your mind what to do with that old piece of Germanic plumbing, just send it to me as a Christmas gift. Considering that today is Christmas Day, it seems appropriate. Let me know. I will send my street address so that you will know where to send that old piece.

See, now you no longer have to worry over what to do with it.

You could let it be the first resident of Michael's Home for Unwanted Horns, where every instrument is treated with dignity and respect.

Seriously, would you be interested in selling it?

I will be glad to buy your B and S trumpet in D for a few hundred dollars.

Re: Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

It is a B-flat horn, just the only markings on the valve casings are the D with a 92 stamped under it. It would play well if the spit valves didn't leak. It definately needs new pads and springs. The laquer is 95% gone and it is solid but has a few redish spots on it but not sure if this is the red rot everyone talks about. I tap on the spots and they are very solid. Here are a couple pics. I have cleaned it a few times since owning it and made sure to lube everything up well and everything works great.

Re: Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

Nice looking horn.

I would get a chemical or ultrasonic clean with pads, corks and maybe springs at a good local shop and then play the heck out of it.

Cornet1 is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

This is identical to the trumpets that I used to teach young beginners the basics during my ten years as an adult instructor with a youth band. Any kids who showed particular promise went straight to cornet,..lesser talents to tenor horn etc.

The later B&S model had the 'Sonora' name engraved on the bell but were essentially identical. They were used by the band because of their very low bulk purchase price, however, I found them to be quite adequate and long suffering under difficult circumstances.

As a life long cornet player I can't see any reasons for spending more to get a supposedly 'better' trumpet (grin)

Re: Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

Last night I Tied a rubber band around the main spit valve to seal it and played it for a while. It seems to play quite well. It is a very warm tone and responds well from low to high C. I think I might send it out to get overhauled. I tried to find pictures of the Sonora model trumpet, but there are none on the web and the only info I found is that they supposedly are a horrible beginner horn, but this one played well in tune. I even tried emailing B&S with pictures and the serial number but have yet to hear anything back.

Re: Need Help Salvage or Scrap??

Well I heard back from B&S this morning. It turns out that my old trumpet is a pro series, model# 3131 called the Exquisit. However it is actually not as old as I thought. It was manufactured in March of 1979. I am definately going to be getting it restored in the next couple months.
