Some people just have seriously good karma, eh? Olds Recordings are great horns, and for $60, if this thing's in any kind of playable or reparable condition you got one of those deals we're all hoping for....

Re: olds trumpet information

Hey there!
It seems I am nearly in the same situation as You are - I found a "Méndez" Trumpet from Olds & Son in this afternoon on the garret. I've never seen it before and none of my parents did ever play the trumpet. I was quite excited, 'cause I already play a Bugle-horn from Olds & Son, but I've never whorried about its origin. I just loved the sound and the machine.
So I took the trumpet out of the case and tried to pull down the valves & the adjustement triggers. They worked quite good, althoug it must have been years since this instrument has been played on for the last time! Walves worked as new with some oil, and so I went on the research of a decent mouthpiece. The tonal quality wasn't so amazing, for I haven't been playing for some time now ... guess it will become better with some practice - The mouthpieces in the case seemed to be only usable for very high parts in funk or free-jazz stuff - You know, the kind of mouthpiece where You have to search for the cavity and the hole ...
I immediately loved the straight attack on every note! No searching, no hesitating - You want to play a high C - there You are! It's quite impressive!
So I did a little research over the net and found this site and some video-clips form Méndez - a fantastic player! Does anybody have an idea 'bout the value of this instrument? Would it be in the same category as the "Recording"? Thanxs for any response!

That's fantastic! No thrift in this area ever has anything I haven't donated, or puts them on ebay or shopgoodwill. Pawnshops around here are pathetic. Congrats on the Recording! Hopefully it will make your learning experience easier and more rewarding.

The Mendez was basically the equivalent of the Recording...they cost about the same on ebay. GREAT FIND!

Re: olds trumpet information

My Recording -'68, is a truly gorgeous looking and sounding horn. But, the trigger operated 3rd valve slide wants to stay extended, because the valve compression is so tight, unless I am quick enough to release it before releasing the valve. Once the valve is up I have to push on the trigger to get it back where it belongs. Is it possible the spring is weaker than it should be?

Re: olds trumpet information

I just paid $900 for one and was THRILLED to get one! You can certainly feel great about your horn. If you ever want to pass it on post it here first. You wont have trouble selling it.

Congrats!
