Re: Orpheum Surpreme Trumpet?

You know Eclipse actually has a special finish that looks like that called the 'Savannah' finish, and it costs extra!!! Go check it out!

Re: Orpheum Surpreme Trumpet?

Congratulations, Aleah; I was in on that auction, too, and was surprised that it went for only $67. I'm glad to hear it was a good find. I got cold feet after my initial bidding, concerned that it might have intonation problems or other quirks associated with horns that old. But it looks like my hesitation was your gain.

Also, when I Googled the brand, I recall turning up information suggesting it was made by Buescher--perhaps a stencil horn made by them--and some generally very positive comments about the build quality. All I can say is that I've never seen such robust bracing on a vintage horn; it looks like it could take a lot of abuse and never get knocked out of kilter.

Good luck with it!

Re: Orpheum Surpreme Trumpet?

Don't know if any of you are still keeping an eye on this thread, but I discovered something new while cleaning this trumpet... The large slide is actually two slides in one. This gives you the crazy ability to lower they key down to a Ab from the Bb, and if you take it apart, take off the cool bracing and use the smaller bracing that normally slides into the cool bracing then you have almost a perfect C tuning. So... this trumpet is REALLY something that I have never seen before. Anyone else out there heard of such a thing?

Re: Orpheum Surpreme Trumpet?

That's awesome! I have heard of it with some of the older trumpets. Some of the Conn models had it, in the 1920s and 1930s I think. 3 for the price of 1!

Re: Orpheum Surpreme Trumpet?

Hey Misty!
I just saw a couple of Ebay that had extra piping included, but haven't seen any yet that have it all built in like this one. Even my husband just LOVES this horn and was nearly as impressed as I was when we figured out the different tunings. It will be great for playing with our pianist in church and will make song transposition right out of the hymn book a whole lot easier for both of us! It really is like having three horns in one! I am our chapel music director so I am always having to transpose stuff and the less I imagine I will have to do in the future the better... at least as far as the trumpet is concerned.. the happier I am in general! :)

Wow, very nice. You got a good deal off ebay. You see, it tends to be to your advantage when the seller knows really nothing about trumpets.

Also, it help if the buyer knows something about trumpets and can sense the buyer doesn't, which is often the case and come out on the right end of the deal.

As far as the slide pitch configurations common one early horns, I have read many times that the B flat tuning is the best, followed by the A and the C tuning is frequently not so good. There are sure to be threads on TH and here about the subject. Hope she got one that they all work well

Re: Orpheum Surpreme Trumpet?

hello!
I think in this case both the seller and I really (I thanked the seller afterwards for the great sale and super fast shipping, and to try and get more info about the horn) asumed the trumpet was going to go for much more than it did. I was really shocked when I won it! Sometimes I get outbid even when I place a bid far higher than I should, and other times no one else bids at all and I end up with a real steal. I can never tell what will happed in the last few seconds of bidding, and because of the time difference between the base we are stationed at and the rest of the US, well... I never get in on the final bids unless I get up REALLy early in the morning.
You are right about the tunings. The Bb is the most solid, The A is actually pretty decent as well, but the C is a little unsure. It tends to want to go a little flat, and there is no give in the adjustments for making it sharper, but for most of my needs it should suit just fine. Either way it was a discovery that made my less than $70 trumpet a real thrill. I love anything that is unique, and I have definately found uniqueness in this trumpet. I will treasure it always :)
