I got it for 200.00 after talking them down from the 250.00 price. We had it reconditioned found out it was made in the early 50's and goes now for about 4K. So pretty good find, my wife was happy as a lark!!!! |

| Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems The woman I'm dating told me the other day she had an old trumpet in her attic she had bought in a lot of musical instruments at auction. She was only buying the lot to get the Gibson guitar. She paid $700 for the lot and sold the Gibson for $4000. She also sold a violin out of the lot for $2000. So she said I could just have the trumpet. She said it was old and junky and was probably not worth anything. I thought it would be a worn out Olds or something similar, but it turned out to be a beautiful King Liberty S/N 111XXX from the late 20's! It plays so well and is in really fine shape for such an old horn. The intonation is also surprisingly accurate. The second valve is corroded and a couple of slides are stuck, but it converts to A so I think I'll use it for orchestra gigs if the transposition is tricky. It has a very distinct sound and just begs to be played with a fat cheesy Harry James vibrato above the staff. What a lucky find (it was lucky finding the trumpet too). Keep your eyes and ears open! | All great finds. Fun to hear about. I have my eye on a silver Benal Henton Knecht trumpet at a flea market. it's totally stuck from slides to valves. In this condition, anyone know if it's worth anything? Thanks. Josue' |

| Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems I bought a Conn Director Cornet back in 1989 for $25. And just recently picked a sweet Yamaha 6320S with LOTS of extras for $125. Plus I got a Bach Student horn for free. A friend just wanted it out of the garage. I gave that one to a 4th grade beginner, to use until she made a decision to keep playing and upgrade. She's doing pretty good and is scheduled for summer band camp this year. Glad I could help. I bought a flute once for $10, but it needed pads which cost around $100. And... I found nice Conn French Horn for my sister down in New Orleans for $100. Now, I working on a Olds Ambass, which belonged to my wifes grandfather, we'll see if the cousin wants to part with it. It was an old U.S. Navy horn. |

| Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems Hi all, I'm brand new to the forum. I think I found a good one today. I went to a garage sale and picked up this totally tarnished trumpet - cornet for $5.00. Got it home and cleaned it, well I'm still cleaning it, but it turns out to be a Conn "New Wonder" s/n 147xxx with a funky tuning slide operated by a threaded wheel. It plays and the valves are lightning quick. Anybody got any info on this, approximate value, that sort of thing. Cool forum by the way. |

| Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems Hey all ~ Sorry, I don't know too much about that New Wonder, but I believe it could be fairly valuable. Yesterday, I answered a craigslist ad for an "antique conn trumpet" From the pictures, it looked like an old 22b or something. I went to the seller's house, and it's a 1935 Conn 22B New York Symphony Special trumpet. The lacquer is about 40-50% remaining, a few dings, and the finger hook is missing. These models had the deluxe engraving, all the way up the bell to the crook, as well as around the rim of the bell, and much more ornate around the "Conn" logo. She was asking $100, a steal, but I talked her down to $80! I took it home, cleaned it out in my little shop with my Dad, and it plays beautifully! Ridiculously fast and light valves, good slotting, even response all around. It also came with a New York Bach 17c1 mouthpiece in very nice shape. The case itself is disgusting, but has an original emblem from the music store in Buffalo where my first horn was bought! Thanks guys ~ |

| Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems I did some looking and have found that this Conn was made around 1914. I think it can be converted to an A cornet by moving/removing the slides. Unfortunately the mouthpiece is stuck in it. I'll have to get professional help to try and remove it. The mouth piece is called a commander mellow cup with the number 3 stamped on it. Anyway I look forward to finding out more about this horn. By the way Buffalo's not too far from Burlington. Why not come up to our Sound of Music Festival in June? Splendid time is guaranteed for all. Thanks, |

Also, go to Horn-u-copia to their Conn thread for more good info. You can do advanced searches on this and Trumpetherald for relevant threads. Happy Hunting! |

| Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems I responded to a Craigslist ad about 'antique silver cornet: $20'. Turned out to be a 1907 York Perfectone in surprisingly good shape - some bell dents, but after a chemical clean/pad, felt, spring replacement it was actually in playable condition. I'm in the process of getting the bell dents out and the leadpipe replaced (the chemical clean discovered a pile of holes; too many to just patch), but the valves were in decent shape and I considered it an excellent deal. And while it's not quite to the steal level, just yesterday I picked up a mid-late 70s Strad 37 Silver (SN 125xxx) with some pitting/silver wear at the usual contact points but otherwise in great shape, with a Jo-ral straight and an old Jet-tone mouthpiece for $750. The guy also had an even older one (SN 66xxx) in even better shape for $900, which tempted me, but since this is just my backup horn I didn't go for it. |

For your sake, I sincerely hope that your old York Perfec-tone cornet is as fine a player as mine. I have used mine repeatedly for solo work in various local churches and have absolutely no reservations about that old horn. OLDLOU>> |
