Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

No Getzen tonight in my coffee ...

I called the Jehovah Witness guy with the Eterna that I spoke about earlier. He declined my offer of a trade. My B & H Imperial Long Cornet, (mfg. 1954) straight up for the Getzen, plus lessons to get him started. Then I tried cash. Still he declined. I really hope that this guy does indeed learn how to play so he can put his horn to good use. I would hate to think of that trumpet just sitting on a shelf with no one to love.

Anyway, the hunt goes on. I'll be sure to post again.

Talk to ya later.

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

Sweet! Yes, nothing like the adrenalin rush when you find a deal like that, eh?
Nothing new on my end lately. I went back to find that Olds "Golden Bear" trombone but it was sold. You snooze I looze.

Brass Crusader, let us know when you get into the basement at that antique store. Better yet, let me know where it is and I will come in a Bug exterminator truck and outfit and see if I can get into the basement with a tall tale of termites.

There is an antique store about a half hour from me and the proprieter's are a sister and brother, or so I think. They kind of fall in the category of hermits. They have so much stuff in their store -- and it looks RIPE to have an old horn in there -- that you can barely get in the store. I solemnly swear, there is one little path into the store, from the front door. It leads to the back where they live and you can barely walk down it, it is so narrow. Stuff is stacked, stacked everywhere on either side, so high you cannot see beyond a foot or so. I almost lost my balance in there a few weeks back taking out tea cups and saucers, brass thermometers, A&W glasses, ceramic horses etc. Sheesh.

I asked about instruments as I had before numerous times. I was told by the brother once that yes, they had some, but they just had to dig them out. They never have. The sister said they had a clarinet.... this time... arghhhh!

But it is absolutely amazing, absolutely and totally. They may have millions of dollars of stuff in there, but you can only ever see a few thousand dollars worth. You just can't get to it.

They have to have some horns in there. They just have to!

I had to get that off my chest.

Thanks.

Dave, I just saw your most recent post. Sorry about the Getzen. I think he knows you want it and there may be some value so he is hanging on to it. Just a guess. If he is not a player, what difference does it make to learn on any horn? Maybe the guy hopes to give Gabriel a run for his money when he gets to the pearly gates.

Dave,

Perhaps I shouldn't have noted in another post that Trumpets are played in Heaven.

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

Billy,
That store of yours sounds very similar to my "gold mine". I just know there is some stuff in storage, amognst the suits of armor, pocketknives, and old swords. The owner told me she's got horns, but isn't ready to take them out. I'm first on her call list, however!

I'll definately let you guys know what happens with it.

Keep looking!!

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

If you are convinced that she has some horns in deep storage, offer her a bit of money just to dig them out, with the proviso that you get the first chance at them. Another inducement might be to offer to advertise them to your local,( and T.M. 'close friends' ) for no charge other than the T.M. advertising fee.

Be sure to send me an immediate email with a list and all other particulars. I am in dire need of some more horns, just to chide my buddy Dave.

We'll see what happens, fellows.
I'm in no rush, just letting her take her time and play it cool. She's promised to call me as soon as she gets them out. You guys will be among the first to find out what I get. I just have a good feeling. I expect, however, the unveiling of a bunch of old student horns... There's always hope, however.

Keep finding these awesome deals!!!!

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

In my ceaseless efforts to keep this thread on the first "page" I've gone and bought another trumpet. The pawn shop I frequent (I've gotten a Holton ST200 and a King Liberty in silver from the 1930's with the Art Deco bracing - both really cheap) had an Olds Recording with no dents, 95% of its lacquer, all the moving parts moving nicely, Fullerton on the bell and a 1964 serial number for $300 (in a nice case). They hadn't priced it when I first saw it. I asked them what they would want and they said they'd have to do some research. They called me two days later and said they were confused - that there were similar offerings on ebay with prices ranging from $600 to $2500 (I think they must have been struggling with the differences between Super Recordings, Recordings, Mendez) so they asked the local music store and their guy said $400 would be a good place to start. I suggested $300 and they said "okay". They must not have had much into it. Today is payday so I'll go and pick it up tonight after work - after I give it a bath I'll try to post some pictures here and at "Vintage Eye Candy". I'd like to say I'm good at this but the truth is I seem to be just lucky.

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

Please do. Very nice find. We have no decent pawn shops around here with stuff like that. Not much in the way of antique shops that might have horns that I know of. Thanks for keeping the thread going. Luck does help! I have come across many an item over the years that I attribute mostly to luck.

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

Hey Guys

Wow great find on the Olds Recording. I am trying to keep from drooling! I have not found anything here recently. Still trying to put together a bit of a deal on a Conn Connstellation. The guy wants $500 and I don't think that is a screamin deal. Certainly not something I can post on this thread.

Anyway, I need your help. I have a King Liberty Artist Bore model. It is a 1930 horn. I need to sell it, and had it listed on Craigslist for $325. I thought I had done my homework on it.

A buyer from out of the area came a long and I figured I better double check its value.... whoa! I think I undervalued my horn.

Did I almost become a seller to someone who might want to put their story on this very page?

Can anyone tell me what a 1930 King Liberty(silver in quite good condition- no dings-) might sell for these days?
