Hello, Russ (topo3man) ... and Welcome to "TrumpetMaster".

Nice "background" story on that New York Bach ... I'm sure that horn will be a "keeper" with a lot of sentimental value.

*By-the-way ... I just got back from Bridgehampton. Went a few miles
East to Wainscott for some great bagels (across from the Post Office).

Best Regards,
Robert Rowe

Robert,

I seemed we crossed paths again! I just got back from East Hampton myself! I think this is the second or third time we were in the same vicinity at the same time. Maybe we'll coordinate someday. I do want you to try my Eclipse MR. Great horn but I have been thinking about trading it in for a MY. Teh MY is supposed to be more open the MR. I have been taking TCE lessons and after getting my chops back the MR feels a little "small".

Gday fellas
Not a pawn shop story , but a good find never the less.........earlier this year I started playing with a local community band. They were in the throes of changing fromm brass band to concert band instrumentation(a pity) anyway they had several cornets surplus to requirements. I had a look at the horns and found a brand new unused 1978 Boosey and hawkes "imperial" cornet. A lovely instrument with a satin silver body and bright silver lpate slides. Nearly 30 years old and never played, with original unmarked case, Lyre, mpc and warranty card. A deal was done and I came away a very happy little cornet player!

Cheers
Laurie

Not exactly "The Deal of the Century", but a good deal, none-the-less....

I recently acquired a fine Reynolds "Ranger" Trumpet. These are similar to a companion model made by OLDS called the "Cadet". Some of you may be familiar with these horns -- they have a plastic (or Nylon?) valve block (the "Ranger's" is black, the "Cadet's" is brown) and modular construction. The 1st & 3rd valve slides are inter-changeable, as are all the valve pistons ( may be inserted in any casing ); in addition, the mouthpipe and the bell-section are removable, via ferruled braces. The "Ranger" is constructed of nickel tubing through-out, while the "Cadet" is constructed of brass (I think, as I don't have one).

In any case, the "Ranger" plays remarkably well, is very well made, and I got it "for a song" (cheap!).

Chalk another one up!

It wasn't a pawn shop prize, but I got a poorly listed Conn 22b(1956) that I got on ebay for $19. It had been buffed to raw brass but played fantastic! I wound up selling it for $125 and it was worth twice that! I since got a 1927 22b in great shape for $140. I love those old Conns!!!

I found a 1916 Conn New Wonder cornet in a pawn shop in Midland, TX for $25 in about 1985. It was rough, with pitted valve a loose front brace and silver worn thru in a few places, BUT it wasn't dinted at all and had beautiful engraving. I spent around $300 1985-dollars to have it replated and the valve rebuilt. It turned out to be a wonder player.

I've always wanted to play a Committee, myself..

But on subject, I am ALWAYS trying to find neat trumpet buys. I have also been keeping an eye out for an estate sale.

What have I found? Bleh, the only thing lately that has caught my eye was an H.N. White Gladiator. Decided not to get it.

I may get up early and go looking tomorrow...

Van ~

Speaking of "Committees" ... that is the horn that inspired this topic.

I have found some v nice horns (and guitars, amps, etc) over the years; some at modest prices, some "real deals", and some "gotta haves" (at, maybe, more than market value).

This year (2005) I acquired a one-owner, "closet-case" 1949 med-bore Committee for $200 (US). I did not go looking for this horn, nor, did I need another (have 3 others). It came to me in a circuitous series of events -- much too long to relate here --.

The moral of the story, is that if you are "out-&-around", "beating the bushes", asking about "any old horns?", etc., etc. ... good things can happen.

Hi Guys

Some cool finds here for sure. My great find is again not from a pawn shop but rather a yard sale. I picked up a Yamaha YTR 2320 in great condition for only $10.00. The only thing wrong with it was that the guide path for the spring in piston # 3 was jammed. So with 5 minutes of work I got a horn that is selling on Ebay used for $300. The lady who was selling it obviously didnt know anything about horns
