Well, sometimes I get lucky, Dave.

I'm just posting about the nice horn that resulted from all the stuff I had to get and do with it.

I seldom mention the "other ones"; ... I've got three (3) Getzen "Frumpets" (Eb/F), and hardly have enough there to put together one good horn; ... but, I'm working on it. Things like this take a while. I "network" myself with other repair techs ... we all have our own "want-lists"; we try to help each other out.

So far, I'm deeply "in-the-hole" ($$) on the "Frumpets". Only time will see me break-even ... if I'm lucky.

I've had a few good deals over the years. Getzen Eterna cornet 30 years old but barely used $250. 1950 Bach NY Mercedes $150., Bach Stradivarius 42B trombone from Salvation Army $95. 1956 Bach Stradivarius 43 $425 Bach ML "Aida" trumpet mouthpiece (extremely rare) $5. Paid everybody what they asked. I don't have the heart to talk people down from a bargain when I know more about these things.

It didn't happen at a pawn shop, but my friend found an early 80s lacquer Bach Strad 37 at a thrift store about 2 months ago for $14.85. He bought it, had it cleaned and sold it for about $750 on eBay. Makes me sick.

That's the point of all this (shopping, looking, "rummaging-around", "schlepping", etc) at pawn-shops, yard-sales, thrift stores, newspaper classifieds, etc.). These instruments are "out there"; you just have to be there -- at the right place, at the right time.

One can have fun at this; it can almost become a hobby. I try to get out and do this about once a week. I collect "vintage vinyl" (33 1/3 RPM record-albums), and always find some. Being knowledgeable about other instruments (guitars, keyboards, banjos, mandolins, woodwinds, etc) is an asset. And, if you don't follow the other instruments, you can probably call (cell-phone) someone who has a knowledge of values, and can tell you what you are looking at.

Does the near mint 1960 Conn 10A Artist I picked up on eBay for $204 count? At least, it was near-mint until customs put it back in its case upside down (ouch). The repair guy managed to fix it, but you can still see the leadpipe was bent up if you are looking for it.

I just received a 1936 Conn 38A Victor for $53. It's now in the shop and should come out nicely, I think.

Regards, Christine

Yes, most definitely, Christine; that 10A Artist for $204 is a splendid purchase (and a "Pawn-Shop Prize"), according to just about anyone knowledgeable regarding the value of these horns.

That 10A Artist has the "Trumpet-wrap", or no? Mine is an earlier one, (as you have helped me in identifying) with the "Trumpet-wrap" and Coprion-bell.

The 38A Victor -- what bore-size?

Yes the 1960 10A (late model) is a trumpet wrap. I also have an early 10A which I like a bit better. The late 10A requires a bit too much air support for my taste.

The 38A Victor is a 0.458" bore (#1 1/2), so it is a bit smaller than an 80A and also a bit shorter and I suspect a bit "taller" Conn changed the wrap around the opera glass tuning slide a bit to make the whole thing a bit shorter. It should come back from the shop one of these days, so we will see what it's like (I hope).

Regards, Christine

"Pawn Shop Prizes"

It's been a while since I've posted on this topic.

I am always on the "look-out" for vintage Martin horns. I have several very nice horns from the late 1930s to the mid-1960s, including Handcraft Committees, Deluxe Committees, Magnas.

Recently "scored" a 1946 Committee for $100. The bell section has a major patch on the bow; no "big-deal", as I have a N.O.S. replacement bell in my shop. Otherwise, the horn is almost in excellent-condition. Has original case (with keys!), lyre.

Dale Proctor has a spectacular aura about
Here are a couple of mine, but I've not had much luck in the last few years:

Mount Vernon 43 Strad - $65 at a junk auction

Olds L-12 flugel - $50 at a pawn shop

Of course, they didn't look this good when I bought them......
