Sounds like a cool horn. I had an Artist that I (actually my dad) bought in '61 or '62. Don't know the model but it was a trumpet wrap (6A or 10A???). I'm hoping to find one again - maybe the one I had back then would be cool.

Mine is Ebay, not Pawn Shop.

1918 C.G. Conn New Wonder Cornet (Bb/A) for $50. It plays pretty well, but is deffinatly not all original. It is in need of a new leadpipe (anyone know were to get one?) I have a feeling the one it has got smashed, its got a metal clamp type thingy around it and the brace is not original. There is also evedence of other soldier repairs. Silver Plate is still 80% or better but could use a really good polish. When I get the money, i will probally try and get it restored, but I dont want to spend 500 to get a full resto (seeing as i dont have that money to throw around in college)

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

This a garage sale story not a pawn shop story, but there both pretty much the same thing anyway.

I looked in the newspaper one day on a saturday morning and there was an add in the garage sale section and it said "Vintage Musical Instruments". As soon as I saw that ad I thought, Man I'm gonna get lucky tonight! So, I go there and most of the vintage stuff the person had was some old flutes and clarinets. But, I did find a 1921 H.N. White Cleveland Ohio American Standard trumpet (pre-King) for $100. It was a little pricy, but the garage sale person was a retired music teacher, so he knew he could get alittle dough for it. It was in perfect sondition and has been cemical cleaned a month prire to the sale. It had it's original case (beautiful red velvet case) and a mouthpiece (not the original mouthpiece). So, I got it and it turned out to be a very reliable horn. It had extremely fast valves (uncommon for extremely vintage horns) and they never stick! You can see 3 pictures of it on this link.

http://www.trumpetmaster.com/vb/show...t=29079&page=9 (VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY)

It was sure worth $100.

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

My story is also an eBay "prize". I collect and play Olds horns and I'd been watching for an Olds Custom C (a real C not a converted Bb). I'd lost one on eBay to Alan Rouse from Olds Central in the last seconds, he had snipe software. Also lost one to Dr. Pepp when it went too high.

Saw one listed with a buy-it-now of $2500, far too rich for my blood but I set it for 'watching'. Checked a couple of hours later and the BIN was now $500!! So of course I grabbed it!

From the looks of it, it had never been played. The plastic bag the horn was packaged in for shipping in the case was there, the keys for the case hadn't been opened, the initial warranty cards were present. Even the valves looked like they never been used! The serial number potentially makes it one of, if not the last, Custom C made within weeks of the Olds plant closing.

Looks and plays perfectly! A real Gem!

Hi all,

Check out my post near the end of the Vintage Horn Eye Candy thread... A friend spotted, but could not identify, what ended up being a Cerveny low-F tpt in perfect working order! I talked the guy down from $200 to $175, just for good measure.

I also got a Triebert flugel from a clothing salesman in Boston who had been conned into buying it from the music store next door. Almost completely unused for $200!

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

Snared another great find!

A 1939 New York Bach "Mercury" Trumpet. Great shape ... almost no original lacquer left; valve-replate by Andersen; original. $450.

These are extremely rare. See the BachLoyalist.com - Home Page website ... the "bachology" -link.

Briefly, these have a small- bore (.440") ... the only small- bore Bb Trumpet manufactured by Bach. Reputed to be a "conservatory" instrument. Bottom-sprung valves. One piece mouthpipe/receiver.

There was a later (Mt Vernon-era) "Mercury"; but, not small-bore ... not bottom-sprung valves.

Plays well ... has a compact, "dense" core (few overtones, harmonics). Great for brass-ensemble, church. Nice, "different" jazz horn.

I was looking for another small-bore horn, for playing "intimate" (small) venues, where volume is an issue.

Yr Fthfl Srvnt,
Robt

Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

A lot of great stories in this thread. My stories involve flugels. The first was many moons ago, a silver LA Benge flugel in a pawn shop for $300. Looked nice, played nice but had slight valve issues. Sold it later and wish now I hadn't. ( I know I'm not the only one out there who has done this!)

The second was more interesting: a 1930's era H.N. White flugel at a yard sale for $100. No dents or dings, great tone but it had some intonation problems. Sold it to an H.N. White collector who didn't happen to have this particular model in his collection.

Regards,
Dave Taylor

I do not know anything about the Conn coprion directors, except that I have the one my Dad gave me when I started playing. Are they considered really nice horns?
