There are many other things more harmful than horns, plus they so pretty to look at. You can choose a new favorite every week! When you have to have a new one (or 2) you can justify it by letting one you have had a while go to a new friend that will take good care of it and so on! It all makes sense to me but my wife....... Just today she wanted to know how come I have every trumpet and cornet in an inventory but I can't locate last years tax return? Why all the questions? Some things are just easier to keep track of...

Try my technique:

Make WOMEN your hobby.

Wives, girl-friends, "significant others", etc., will be more than happy for you to indulge in the less capricious "hobby" of VHA (Vintage Horn Acquisition).

That 47 special in the original case has the keys to the case too. Thought you would like to know?

No, it's not worth it buying an old horn. So the next time you find a Conn 12b with the beautiful Coprion bell, just give me a call and I'll take the nasty thing off your hands so that you won't have to be found playing an ancient relic!

I'm an old relic so I don't mind playing the antiques. My regular horn is '47 Conn 22b. I had no intention of falling in love with this old horn with the rather rough finish. But the sound and response of the horn were so nice, and it projected that sound with this ringing quality that I was entranced with====so, the old horn stole my heart. Even my trumpet teacher, who's a professional and plays only Bachs, admits that I sound best on the old horn.

Canadian, here's the reasons I bought an old horn in no particular order: 1) I'm a comeback player, & ALL horns can be played better than I can play them. 2) The gentleman who runs the "gearhead" site, the Schilkie Loyalist, wrote that we sound pretty much like ourselves no matter what we play. He mentioned a K-Modified as a possible used horn to keep an eye out for. 3) I don't like sliver plate finish. 4) I was happy to own something "unusual" that won't be the run of the mill horn as long as it plays good. 5) Price. I paid $670 for my Selmer, and it's a gorgeous beast plays like a dream. Super projection. Great sound. There's a gentleman in Tennessee I believe, horn restoration man, I'm in line to have her overhauled in the fall.

I agree with the players who posted before me that there's a thrill and a fact in owning a great older horn. You've got something that at one time was the best there was. For a couple years, I worked in a So. Calif. high-volume music store 25 years ago. We sold lots of brass and woodwinds. I got a chance to play all of them. We sold mostly Bachs, but had Benges and Olds, 1 Selmer Radial, but Bachs were the king then. I guess what I'm trying to say is that what's hot now and WAY cool might be preciesly that. But given time . . . oh heck I don't know how to express what I'm trying to say other than over time, my tastes have changed.

I like the old horns.

Happy Practicing

My answer to the original question is "Maybe". I used to be an old horn fanatic and accumulated way too many without really paying attention to what I was buying. I was mainly concerned with price and looks. I had some really cool, cheap, old horns that played so badly that I eventually sold them all.

What I'm saying, is don't buy indiscriminately. Research the horn first to see if it has a good reputation as a player. Old horns are fun to look at for a while, but if you can't use them, they will give you less long-term enjoyment. Of course, a horn one person says is great may be a dog to you, so it's still no guarantee that you'll get a player.

I recently bought a '60 Conn Victor trumpet on eBay, and it's a great horn, a player, in almost new condition. I bought it because it's identical to the one I had in high school, and was pleasantly surprised at how well it plays.

Old horns

In response to Dale Proctor, if you get lucky, like me, you will find some other trumpet players who are looking for the opposite type of sound from a trumpet than what you prefer. As an example, I personally prefer a VERY responsive, bright sounding horn that slots solidly and feels like it comes to life in my hands. I have found a couple of other players,( collectors of vintage horns ) that prefer rather dark sounding trumpets with a propensity for slippery slots. We have made some trades and we are all happy with the results. Total honesty in your descriptions are an absolute imperitive if you want to continue to trade like I do. A bad reputation is pretty easy to obtain if you are less than candid about condition and playability of the piece that you are trading away.

I was clearing out some of my collection and decided to put an old 1930's Crusader "pea-shooter" trumpet on eBay. Very nice original condition, except the valves are somewhat worn. A very small bore, bright-sounding horn. Anyway, it sold for about what I thought it would bring, but guess who bought it? Jerome Callet! I've read that Mr. Callet has been known to play some vintage instruments. I wonder what's in store for this one?
