I saw a Balanced Action Sax when I worked in a repair shop. Odd looking thing for sure. A friend of mine had a King Super 20 tenor sitting in his basement for years before he realized what it was...that would buy a LOT of trumpets!

![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn It seems that Martin Committees and Olds Super Recordings are high on the list. Is this driven by how they play and look or is it partly, at least, because sellers are demanding high prices for them. Can we call this the 'Monette' effect? Regards, Trevor |

![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn I have both a Recording and a Committee.....they both play well and sound great. The Recording is the better looker IMO but the Committee has something I can't put my finger on. I have some really nice horns..new and old including a very rare 1934 Balanced Action and quite often I'll think..."If I had to grab one horn and run what would it be" ...I mostly think the Committee. There is something in the sound of the Committee that is missing in all the other horns....weird. At the end of the day it is reputation and rarity that drive the prices..... Walter |

![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn Walter, I can see that some trumpets will be rare because there were very few made and they have some certain collectors' cache. I can understand that a large bore Committee Deluxe, engraving and all would command a premium. I don't know a whole lot about Committees or vintage horns at all but from what I've seen on e-bay Martin Committees, in general, don't seem to be rare at all. Same with Olds Recordings. I know the Super Recording had a very limited production period and is rare but there are tens of thousands of Olds Recordings still floating around, yet the more the price rises the more people seem to want one. My point was that it appears that if all of a sudden the price of a particular species of trumpet goes up, people want it even more..regardless of how it plays. Human nature I guess. That's all that was meant. Regards, Trevor PS Just to prove I'm not a complete Philistein, a mint pre-war Besson Meha would be on my list, providing I could play it first. Barring a miraculous set of circumstances, that ain't likely to happen. |

![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn There's a reason I hang on the the 50's Calicchio, but other than that - a Conn Vocabell, for sure! If I played nothing but combo gigs, that's the horn I'd play! Trent, I know someone who plays your dream horn, and it's beatiful, too :)

![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn For me it's a three way tie between a MARTIN COMMITTEE below 200k, a Chicago Benge and a Burbank Benge. I would be very interested to try a Callichio that was made by Dominic such as the one I think you have Flugelgirl. meauxhorn. |

I will look out for your mint Meha.....I can't buy any more trumpets...!!!! I have spent the last of my saved trumpet budget on a large bore Committee today!! I collect early next week...these forums have a lot to answer for...I can only hope I will be the next Chris Botti......Chet Baker....Miles... I am sure you are right.......about perceived values.....Maybe I'll sell all my horns and get a Monette.... then again how would I respond in the thread that goes...which horn do you regret selling! ![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn Well guys, I think Walter said it best. He's right. There is something about the sound coming out of a Committee! Don't get it out of any other horn I've played. Don't know what "IT" is but it's unmistakable, at least when I listen to me played back. Richness? Fullness? Round Sound? Who the hell knows. But that's why it's a Martin. Thanks for the backup,Walt. Also,I must confess,I don't own a horn made after 1956,except for a '74 Getzen Capri,so I can't address the last few decades of primo horns, haven't played them enough. Franco |

![]() | Re: Is there any kind of consensus on the most desireable vintage horn I would think that a couple other trumpets would be any vintage KINGS like Liberty's, Symphony 20's , the Master Models, most any Stering Silver bells or even any vintage Silver Flairs. Probably the last of the Great KINGS made.
