Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Here are some pictures. Still seems odd to me that the internal and external valve markings are 7, 8 and 9 instead of 1, 2 and 3. I've seen some other pictures that make me think this is very similar to a Conn Wurlitzer but I really can't tell. cornet 002 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 001 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 006 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 008 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 004 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 007 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 005 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! cornet 003 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! Stamped on the leadpipe is the word "France." Any ideas you might share would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Consecutive numbering on the valves was very common in Europe. Some manufacturers went from 1-99 others 1-199. That is why your cornet is numbered 7, 8 and 9.

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Well that helps a bit! Thanks for the clue that it may be European in manufacture. Love the way it plays. Best $100 I ever spent on my musical hbbies. Regards,

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet For authenticity, check out excelsiorcornetband.com. This is our group and our instruments. We try probably a little too hard to be true to the era. I get ribbed at times because my 1870 B flat SARV cornet has a spit valve on it! If you want to be authentic, why not try to be a turn of the 20th century town band? Could be fun! Lots of nostalgia there. FARBY means Far Be It For Me To Tell You That You Are Out Of Character! We get razzed every now and then. I went out and bought a Civil War era pocket watch just to fit in.

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Hey Dale, We are playing at the GABBF this year. Unfortunately I am a Middle school band director and school's not done here in central New York until the end of June, so I won't be there. My uniform will probably be there though! I also have two local weddings to play on June 14, so I'm stuck here. Would love to meet and talk shop sometime. Lee Turner (Sterling)

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Hi Lee - sorry I'll miss you, but I'll say hello to your uniform if I see it.... My uniform's made a few more gigs than I have, too.

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Your cornet looks a lot like one I have - it's marked Goumat, made in Austria. Others have dated it to the 1920's, and think it may be one of the "Selmans" of it's day - made by an anonymous European company and stamped with many names. Not a bad player for it's age, but yours looks to be in better condition. Maybe yours just missed getting stamped...?

Re: Trying to fix a date and manufacturer to a possibly vintage cornet Dear Ms Fluglegirl, Thanks for your reply. You may be correct. I had begun to suspect a week or so ago that it was a stencil that never got stenciled. On the leadpipe it is stamped as coming from France. (Just FYI.) Valves numbered 7 thru 9 internally and externally. Other than that, no markings. Raw brass. I probably spend too much time polishing it to some peoples' tastes, but I like my horns bright and shiny for performances. If you have pictures of your similar horn that you wish to share, or if you've posted to horn-u-copia with it, I'd like to take a look. I know this one isn't the correct vintage for my re-enactment band, but it does play well. Someday if my ship comes in I'll get one of the few available period pieces or find someone who makes a good replica. Right now though, I'm just having fun playing it. Does GABB stand for Grand Army Brigade Band or something else? Yours,
