Re: Vintage Conn

Got a few of them around...a late (79) Constellation; a 32 40-B Vocabell (raw brass); a 33 22-B NYSymphony; and just got my hands on a 28 2-B New World Symphony in gold. I LOVE all of them...different moods, different horns; each is "special" in its own way. I usually reach for the 22-B first (and it sits out as my "regular" horn) I really like the Vocabell, as its got an excellent sound and is so distinct in looks. The Connie is the one I use in band work. Haven't even put a m/p in the 2-B as yet...it literally just came out of the box and awaits its first gentle cleaning...but the thing is absolutely gorgeous.

Re: Vintage Conn

This is my first post. Ihave a 1966 Connstellation, with trigger, and the original warranty cards! It is almost mint, with just a few scratches. Serial numberH72159. It is the lightweight model with the slightly smaller bell. It is amazing. A guy in my community band likes it bettter than his MONETTE! It is so beautiful, I just cant find words to describe it. I bought it last year for 600. It is truly amazing.

Re: Vintage Conn

I have a 26 26-B that someone had apparently (?) cut the end of the leadpipe off of. I put a Pilzcuk (sp?) leadpipe on and it plays with a very nice tone. However, it is a bit stuffy, which in combination with the raspy sounds the valves make leads me to think it might need a valve job. The tuning slide has the knob to switch between Bb and A. The intonation is very good, it does better without the first valve saddle than most modern horns do with it. Right now its my backup Bb. It is interesting, but due to the stuffiness kind of hard to play.

Re: Vintage Conn

Interesting horns so far. I have a few Conns I play. I have a rimless Conn 40A art-deco peashooter (OK its a cornet leadpipe on a trumpet body) in mint condition, an early 16B with coprion bell and a 80A another vintage cornet. I have a lot of King trumpets mostly Liberties of which two are solid silver bell SilverTones. I play all my trumpets. I'll play one for a while and then switch to anopther for a while. That way they all stay in shape. Of the Conns I really like the 40A. I am looking for a 50's model Connstellation (I played one in High Scool and College) but no luck yet.

Re: Vintage Conn

I have a Conn Constellation that my parents bought for me when I was in high school in 1966. There is a B on the receiver and the serial # is E96744 which I believe makes it a 38B manufactured in 1965. This has been my only trumpet since that time and I would never think of parting with it. I use it in both a big band setting as well as orchestral and chorale. It has been a great instrument.

Re: Vintage Conn

I have a 'few' Conn trumpets and cornets but, my current favorite is my recently acquired 36A Concert Grand cornet. I have fallen in love. I rate it above all of my other cornets, except my York Airflow cornet, and that is NOT faint praise.

Re: Vintage Conn

I had a 38B Connstellation trumpet beautiful sounding.......then I sold it on eBay. I liked my Olds Studio better....

But I still have my 17A, and 18B Coprion Directors.

Conns....Oldies-but-Goodies!

A year ago, a colleague offered me his 1965 Connstellation for $250 if I would keep it to play. It was my original horn. Well, different serial number but indistinguishable. And he had only played it one year in the mid 1960's and stored it well. I love it and use it most of all.
Jim, does the serial no. on your 1965 Connstellation start with the letter "E"? I just turned 50 and still have the Connstellation that I bought used in jr. high school (circa 1971) for, coincidentally, $250. That's a great story about you getting a near-identical Connstellation back into your hands.

I won't part with my Connstellation, ever. I've owned the pro line of Yamaha trumpet and flugelhorn some 25 years ago, but was stupid in selling them -- maybe I was on some of the weed you smoked? Anyhow, I just bought a lightly used (with no dents/dings or scratches) Jupiter 846S flugelhorn with a serial no. starting with the letter "E," which has yet to arrive and which is one of the newer, better quality flugels made by Jupiter. I look forward to getting it and trying it out next week.

As for the rest of your Conn-heads, would you ever part with your vintage Conn horns?

Cheers!

Herb

Re: Vintage Conn

I picked up a 1969 Conn Connstellation 36B a while back. It plays extremely well. I actually got interested in the Conn after hearing Brian MacDonald, the lead player for The Airmen of Note, play one.I don't play it like Brian, but it is a very sophisticated horn for it's time period.

Re: Vintage Conn

I Really like my silver 6B Victor. It's not as old as what most people consider vintage, but it was made very similar to the older ones. I'm thinking of sending it off for a valve job, but kept well oiled it sounds big and beautiful. What I like most is the large bell, and the short valve stems, oh and the wide wrap, and the cool valve caps, and the most unique valve springs I've seen anywhere. I will probably find a nickel plated connstellation someday to go with it. Just look at the picture of Dale Proctor's 1960 6B and imagine it in all silver without the fancy engraving, and that is my horn. Does anyone else have one like I'm describing?
