Re: Vintage Conn

My Conn trumpet is a '32 New Era 10B peashooter. I came across this horn at the local swap meet, and it looked pretty dirty. Mostly a mottled black over gold. I took one look at the engraving, and I knew I had found a gold plated version, as I had seen this same Conn emblem on a gold plated sax previously. Took it home and applied some silver cleaner and boy was I a happy camper ! What a good looking horn. Valves were in great shape and after a good cleaning, it plays great ! Solid lead horn, a bit bright, but slots very easily. Real fun to play !

Later on, I also found a Conn 80A cornet, a real fixer upper, with all of the extra slides at this same swap meet. This horn looked pretty worn and looked like the silver was wearing thin with the brass beginning to show through. I figured I'd take it home and strip the little silver left and use it bare brass. Once home I started to clean it, and man was I surprised. It wasn't the brass showing through, it was the gold plate wearing away and showing the silver underneath. Valves are pretty worn , so I am going to send it in for a valve job and have the gold replated. I know this will cost a pretty penny, more than the horn is worth, but I really want a gold plated cornet to pair with my trumpet.

One other horn that I found at this swap meet was a Martin Committee cornet.
Not a Conn, but man do I love this swap meet !
All said, I've paid $110 total for all 3 horns.
$50 for the 10B, and $30 each for the Cornets,
which included a mangled Getzen 300 trumpet that I gave to a tech.

Needless to say, I'm going to the swap meet tomorrow !

Re: Vintage Conn

I own a 1947 Conn 22B.
It had two small dings, which I repaired last week.
Now I'm stripping its lacquer and will receive a gold bath.
Lovely horn in almost mint condition.
Best regards !!!

Re: Vintage Conn

Hey eveyone,
I remember seeing references to Conn 22b NY Symphony Special trumpets. I don't know if it was here, but this fits in anyway.

I was playing with my old Middle school jazz ensemble several weeks ago. There was some 7th grader in the section, with a horn that I immediately saw was an old Conn. I looked at it, and it was a 22b NY Symphony Special.
I read somewhere about how rare these are in as good of shape as this one is. The pics are ones that I snapped during a break. The lacquer is immaculate all over. The only difference that I spotted between this and a straight 22b Ny symphony was the engraving... deluxe? All the way through the bell crook.
I read some more on these horns, but I've still gotta research the serial #.
sorry, but the photo is too large to load, apparently. I'll keep trying.
cheers

Re: Vintage Conn

Thanks for the photos...the lacquer on the one I saw was 10x nicer than that of the one on ebay...the kid used a leather valve guard.
Thanks again.

Re: Vintage Conn

I have a 1935 conn 2b witch is all around the best horn that I've ever played! I need to send it out to get the valves replated, but I just hate to be without it for as long as that will take.

How do you know it's a 22B?

Re: Vintage Conn

My opinion from somewhat learned observation, Conn loyalist and that OLDLOU thinks it is, also and put in an early bid. There was another one listed some time ago there that looked the same. Will be interesting to see if there is a flurry of late bidding. As I recall I think the last one went for $160 or so. Of course , I could be wrong as often occours.

The list of Conn models at
The Conn Loyalist
is only a partial list.

A more complete list of Conn models is at
The Conn Loyalist
and we don't have photos of many of those models.

Because the 22B was relatively popular and so many of them were made, there is a good chance that the 1933 trumpet at GoodWill is a 22B, but the buyer is taking a risk that it might be something else if the buyer does not ask GoodWill to look for the "22B" on the mouthpiece receiver.
