Once I had a length of clear soft plastic lab tubing with a hole down the center. I saw that the diameter was the same as the Conn corks, so I cut 3 proper lenghths, filed a groove down the side of each, and they fit my Conn perfectly, although the center hole was a little tight. Voila ! With a felt on top I had permanent, indestructible "corks".

Actually, I do have a set of slotted corks that of the real deal. On thing is, I need to cut one down to size and I am a bit chicken to do it myself.
Use a small Exacto knive from a hobby store and go very slow! The problem with so much of the cork you find today is that it is not high quality stuff. It craccks and flakes too easily resulting in a short lifespan for the corks. Because the old Conns use so much cork, I'd rather send the horn off to Bob Reeves or Charlie Melk and have the artificial material put in. That way, I don't have to worry about disintegration, moisture or compression.

Any ideas on this one? It dates to 1962. From research I've done the 1st slide lever is the same as used in the opera model. This horn does not appear to have been messed with, it looks new but not redone or worked on, I'm thinking it was ordered from the factory this way. Anyone?

By the way it's an Olds recording.

Christine,

The basic problem with the Conn corks is the slot. I would use a lolipop stick and put it in the slot before cutting. If you try to cut without having something in the slot you will stand a good chance of splitting the cork. A coping saw and a miter box are very useful if you have access as well. But in a pinch, a steady hand and exacto-knife will work.

Don't let that stop you. We all enjoy looking at nice vintage horns whatever the age. The Lehnert I posted first is mine, the others belong to a serious collector in our band. HIS wife is the understanding one!
Anyone interested in more pics of these horns and many others, along with descriptions, go to our band website at www.otbrass.com .

As for the valve arrangement on the OTS horns, most are TARV. You will find a few SARV and an occasional Beliner valved one, though.
Allright Dale you talked me into it:

Beautiful set of instruments, Kinghornplayer. I like the silver horns with gold mouthpieces. Here's a few of my other horns:

The first is an Olds L-12 flugelhorn from 1968.
Next is a Mt. Vernon Bach Strad 43 from 1955.
Last is my newest aquisition, a Conn 6B Victor from 1960. I bought it on eBay and it's almost like new!

Very Nice Dale!

Thanks the Mouthpieces are Monette's. My playing really took off when I started to play on them so I figure I'll stick with what works. I didn't plan it that way but I'm with you it does have a astetically pleasing look!

I gotta hand it to Tom for starting this thread...

I've spent much time in it just drooling. Don't get me wrong I love my horns! It is just really cool to see what other people have.

Best to you!
John

Man, that's an impressive collection of vintage Bachs! I'm a horn nut and never tire of looking at old and unique horns.

To A.N.A. Mendez - sorry, I have no bones to throw. I've never seen a Recording with a 1st valve trigger. Looks like the trigger and slide from a Mendez. Maybe it was a period option?
