Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Hey all,
beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If someone asks price X and somebody else pays, nobody was ripped off.

The rip off only comes when there is misrepresentation, or deceipt.

My problem with transactions like this is that generally those horns are collected and no longer played. I feel that is a a loss to the community. Why can't the collectors just collect the playing dogs and leave the good stuff to us?

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Interesting.....I used to play a 60's era Benge that had belonged to Bobby Shew, but it wasn't the right horn for me and I sold it. I had the oppertunity to tell Bobby that a few years ago, and he said that was the same reason he sold it. The guy I sold it to LOVES it. I guess the point is that there's something out there for everyone, but I have a hard time believing that this early Benge would be a better player for someone than a slightly later model priced around $1200 or so. That means rowuk is probably correct in assuming that it will belong to a collector and not a player, which is a little sad. Oh, well - I guess museums need stuff, too. Now I'm rambling....
Oh, as for the monette, I've played several and none were a proper fit for me, which tends to make me think it's not worth it to spend that much. You'll see by my list that I play a very respectable bunch of equipment, and I play it because it fits me well, not because I'm cheap!;)

An entirely valid opinion, but I am of the belief that asking dramatically more than something is worth is merely a form of preying on uninformed buyers and as such is a ripoff. If the seller knows exactly what he's doing and knows what comparable horns run for, then I have no complaint. When items priced like this sell, however, that is almost never (in my experience, absolutely never) the case.

That much is truly a shame.

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

I would love to know the history of 681. I asked seller about this and he said it came to him from a store. I think horn is beautiful and would love to see how it feels to play. I got intoduced to Benge via an 82-83 CG model and have recently found two ML CHICAGO and one 53-54 Burbank Bflats. All are very responsive with resonation and very enjoyable to play. 12k is too steep for me however. I'll keep looking . meauxhorn

El Smoko states that it's "museum quality" -- sell the thing to the Smithsonian!

Yeah and it you follow to the seller's page, he makes it clear that there are no returns on the deal. All sales final.....could it be that when you get your $8000 box of schrapnel you might want a refund? =

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Typical Ebay ..... just hit up the pawns. Or make a special trip to a city known to have really good pawns like maybe Chicago or NYC or something, do some real hands-on shopping.

I mean, for that kind of money (assuming I had it!) I'm sure I could hit the city of SF and have a great time shopping the various horns available, have some good food, kick around, have a great time. Come home with a new best friend (the trumpet, I mean!)

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Yup a 4K discount...and it still didn't sell -- looks like El Smoko got smoked. I particularly like how he concluded potential bidder inquiries with the on-going veiled threat about how this will be may be your only chance to ever have yada yada... Look, Elden made what >2100 of those things...and Joe's Benge resource site accounts for about 12% to date...I'm confident most of those horns are still around and will no doubt be popping up now and again essentially forever.

Smoking's bad for you anyway...
