Hey, isn't America about free speech and the like? Give the guy a break. Anybody that has been to the middle east experiences pressure sell jobs that make this guy seem like he is GIVING the horn away.

If any of you have EVER bought a persian rug at ANY price, you have no right to criticize this guy. There are margins in that product that you can't imagine!

Let him keep trying. We know better and that is all that counts. I also think that $1000 to $1500 is the max that I would place on an axe like this. It is just not a super rare vintage horn.

YO RO: usually I'm 100% on board with you,& read all your post with the lean to learning something, but this guy is a predator and a con. Yea, we know better, & guys like me on the down & done side laugh at him. But it's the up & comers that guys like him target. Just hate to see it, that's all. Persian rugs? Think about the nimrods who get screwed buyin those things. Anyway, guys like him give the bay & players a shady rep. No honor there. period. Franco

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Good point, Franco, and part of the reason I posted this in the first place. Maybe if a bunch of us that know better discuss stuff like this on the forums, it'll give the younger guys some information that they didn't have before. Maybe we can keep them from falling for stuff like this! I don't have a problem with someone making money off a horn, but raping your customers is not acceptable, either. Maybe people in other countries are used to ridiculous bartering, but this is American Ebay! Most Americans are just not that good at bartering to begin with, and you have no chance to even try with "buy it now". Let's educate the next generation on horn shopping as well as music - it might save someone a lot of heartache.

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

I just dislike hotdeal's ways. I buy and sell horns too and make profit but I just see all of his "pricing" and want to bonk him on the head. Set a fair price or low reserve and see what the item is "really worth".

IMO I've seen him sell a bunch of high-priced junk.

buyer beware....

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Is it just me, or does this seem in way to nice of condition for a 24k gold plate no repair horn from that long ago? Also, I can't really tell or not, but the 6 in the 681 number looks like there is some scratching or something just above it. Could these be pictures from someone good with photo editing, or could that just be a slight machining mishap

Hey, Meauxhorn! Well, it's just that ebay may be fine for all the wheelers and dealers out there -- but I'm just a horn player...not a salesman, collector, or craftsman. I could never buy a horn w/o playing it. I hazard a guess that a significant number of these horns are being passed around on ebay cuz a buyer was disappointed upon receipt. Just my thoughts. (...actually even a vacuum is a risky purchase...you know you plug it in and the light don't even go on! Geeze!)

Did anybody else notice 1) the third valve regulator is mounted upside down (it's not just the slide upside down, the thing is actually soldered on upside down) and 2) the valves appear to be monel pistons. I don't think they had monel back when this horn was supposedly made, did they?

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

Great observation bigtiny. I too noticed the valves but was so taken with the horn I let it slip my mind. I enjoy using vintage Benge trumpets. They are light weight, resonant and very responsive. I would love to know the history of this #681. If you enjoy and appreciate Benge, check out Joe Lill's interesting site. It's The Chicago Benge Resource site. meauxhorn.
