Bigtiny -- Interesting observations. According to Joe Lill's Benge site, Chicago 3rd-valve slide rings could be top or bottom mounted; unfortunately, Joe offers no photos illustrating the assembly differences. It's well known that Benge used nickel valves -- switching to monel in the mid '70s [post-15000 or so] a few years into the Anaheim period when they really started to ramp up production.

Smokes says he doesn't know the horn's history -- suggesting two things: (1) he cannot guaranteed the horn to be "all original"; (2) he bought it at an estate sale for $150.

Echoing TrentAustin words, buyer beware; or, as we used to say in the old country, caveat emptor.

Re: would you pay this much for a horn?

WOW! What a crazy price, but you guys should probably note that if hotdealsmoko is a scammer, then he would obviously post a photo of a real Chicago Benge. All of this scrutinizing of the numbers being a millimeter tilted/photo editing would not really make sense.

Personally, I think that horn is real, but as you guys have said, there is really no room for taking a risk with so much money. I'm sure most of those old Chicago Benges were played by fantastic players, so I doubt that there is anything extra special to the extent that the seller is advertising.

Re: He's Back

...I'm beginning to lose count but I think this is his 4th posting...now priced at $5,749.99 (I wonder what the 99-cents is for?) -- with a buy it now price of $7,800.00.

I surmise he didn't have much success at the flea market...
