Question for Andy Mac

How do you tongue? I keep splitting the high notes when I tongue. Your record makes it sound so easy to do but it's not....that's why you're who you are I suppose. I get a lot of spit in my trumpet. Am I doing something wrong and that's effecting my tonguing?

Thanks, A-mac....you're man....Fo' Shizzle!

Love,
Huggy Bear

Re: Question for Andy Mac

Huggy,
Maybe you are tounging between your teeth. If you are that only works in marching band and that might be why you are splitting those notes.

I didn't know you could have too much spit? I always thought the more the better.

Later Huggy.

Andy Mac

Yo, Yo, Yo....A-mac.....Thanks for the help, my man! Huggy thought you had to touch the hole in the mouthpiece with your tongue, but aparently not. Where does your toungue hit? Do you use your throat instead to keep your tongue from going through your teeth?

Thanks, yo. you're kool....Fo' Shizzle!

Love,
Huggy

Closet ontologist that I am, I like to divide the stuff coming out our water key into two categories: "Spit," coming from our mouth, and condensed water vapor. The later comes from deep breathing and blowing out hot, steamy air (the bottom of our lungs is more humid than the top), the former from, uhhh, spitting the notes out.

Emptying the water key because of condensed water vapor is a good thing, made even better than the violist-gross-out factor of calling it "spit." If we are emptying real spit, it should be able to gross out trumpeters as well!

Re: Question for Andy Mac

In Germany there are many classical players that tongue between the teeth directly on the lips to get a very positive start to the tone - even at ppppp. It is also used for extreme secco passages.
This is VERY contrary to what I was taught in the states in the 70's. I have to admit that since I got used to it, it does offer advantages in certain situations as well as additional articulation "sounds".
