Re: The Art Ensemble of Chicago

I miss Lester so much, that was a fun band, and a perfect mix of personalites. Jarman and Mitchell can be kind of astringent for my tastes but Lester and Malachi and Don Moye kind of smooted them out. Lester and Don Cherry both I really miss though I must confess when I would see Don play the trumpet I was sometimes tempted to stand up and yell, "Breath, dammit!" But a moire musical person has not existed.

After he passed,I found out that his wife was Fontella "Rescue Me" Bass.

That song was a hit circa 1965 and upon my arrival in Vietnam on November 5,1968 I heard that song every day until my departure, and it was adopted
as the National Anthem of the US ARMY in Vietnan.

There is a player in the LA area named Kris Tiner that is keeping Lester alive through his music (and Kris's new music). Check it out:

Very cool stuff....

Thanks Paul.
Which one of Kris' recordings you recommend as an appetizer ?
In reviewing his performance schedule,I don't see him appearing EAST of the Mississippi .
What gives ?
The 'Burgh is a great place to showcase one's axe.

Joe,

Kris has released many sides in the past few years. I really like "Day of the Race" from the MTKJ Quartet (nine winds), but my fav. is his trio recording "Free Jazz Kamikazes" (it's self released). He is a fresh voice on the trumpet, and a great composer too.

I first met Lester at his annual gig at the U of Washington. My old mentor and friend, the late Roy Cummings, the jazz studies and trumpet professor...let me borrow a bunch of The Art Ensemble tapes.

I was forever hooked and made sure that I attended any Gig that Lester performed when he would blow through here in the NW. He was HELL OF A GREAT ENTERTAINER and equally a wonderful musician, that had an amazing amount of fun....but most of all he was one beautiful giving human being that left this earth, all too soon.

Brass Fantasy was like Opera Without Words. They did all those oldies from my era. Every time I heard "I Only Have Eyes for You," I pictured the smooth Flamingos doing that song. Lester was a fun player, and also a creative force that was under-appreciated.

I love fresh voices and have added his name to my "Must Get List."
Thanks.
