I knew I could win it, I wasn't in it mentally by the time I got to play. Last time I went down I was 2nd runner up.

If you show up thinking, "Well, maybe I'll get lucky and play great", you aren't ready! Then the committee wouldn't have to sit and listen to 100 people!

There is little possibilities to win a big audition in the first try, it is just a matter of statistics. For example: Pete Ellefson, trombone teacher at indiana Univ., lost 31 auditions before he got the Seattle Sym´s 2nd trombone position and I bet this is the case for most of the people. There is a lerning process regarding auditions.

In my case, I did the Boston Sym. audition for principal trp. and I knew I was not going to win because: 1-) it was my first big audition. 2-) I felt that I needed more preparation. 3-) I didn´t have the rotary valve required for german pieces.

In spite of all this, I decided to make the audition as a learning experience, not only for future auditions, but also because I teach trumpet students, so I wanted to have that experience so that I can tell how it is to future students, and tell them what to expect.

May I rant for a moment? I hope I don't come off as a jerk, but it may happen. I registered at 9:30 this morning and was number 88. There were 93 people at the audition, and I think just from hearing people play at random, that fewer than half could have actually held a position it that band.

They are MARINES. They need players that can wait 9 hours under water in a swamp, feeding themselves with worms and then jump out of the water with a crew cut, perfectly ironed uniform, spit shined boots and play like the best.

Yes Dylan, I can sympathize with you. There are an awful lot of players out there that will NEVER land a job playing. I guess it is a question of how much time the ensembles want to spend on finding players. Just imagine if it was like football and they sent scouts out - very few would ever get a chance then!

Even if he doesn't, his self confidence would lend itself to becoming one. His avatar signature is a bit below his niveau though. Inanimate objects don't suck, the wrong player behind them can however.

Point well taken !
With that said,I'll prefer if the scout is neither a present and/or former trumpet player nor a business man as I personally would prefer the scout to recognize a "diamond in the rough."

From my life experiences and inter actions,I strongly believe that cats like Duke Pearson and Art Blakey had great ears for recognizing "diamonds in the rough."

The records (pardon the pun) would confirm my assertion. !
