Being a Professional Musician

I guess this is going to sound kind of silly, but how did you get into being a professional musician? Why did you choose it?

Dear Annie:
Please don't reach for your gun.
The only silly question is the one NOT asked.
Since some of my best friends are musicians, over the last 45 years,I've learned from them that "it's a calling" i.e; they have dedicated their life/career to making and/or playing music to communicate with us mortals
so our soul's can be enriched.
In my honest opinion, music can be a beautiful metaphor to guide one through their everyday life.
By the way, there is a recording titled "THE CALLING' by Richard Boulger that
I'm sure you will enjoy.
Happy listening and remember to get to CARNEGIE HALL one must practise, practise, practise.

Side bar: Hank Mobley is the cat who gave us "NO ROOM FOR SQUARES."

Re: Being a Professional Musician

Hi Annie,
I don't think I ever seriously considered any career other than music. From my first lesson on trumpet, I was in love. I was able to play a couple scales, and thanks to the teacher a few recognizable songs.
It didn't hurt growing up a block from the Heath family, or being walking distance to the Academy of Music where the greatest orchestra of the time resided.
There was music all around me...........I never had a choice

Re: Being a Professional Musician

I'll agree with everyone else by saying it's a love kind of thing, and love can be dangerous sometimes. If we really love the trumpet, love making music, love being just a part of the ensemble, love the challenges and the contentment of mastering new techniques so much that it is all we want to do is to make music; that is a good thing. If we love the applause, love playing louder, higher, faster and making more money than the guy next to us so much that it is all we want to do; that is not a good thing. If we are willing to make music our life, it can make us a living. If making a living is more important to us; if the applause and ego-stroking is the payoff, then a career in music will be nothing but one disappointment after another.

Have fun!
