Blue Mitchell

On this day (3/13) in 1930,Blue Mitchell (Minor Vamp) was born.
A much under-rated player who deserves greater recognization.

Many years later,Terence Blanchard arrived on said day and who is contributing to maintain that proud 'brass' tradition.

Happy birthday and long live BOP !

Re: Blue Mitchell

When ever Horace came to Philly I got a chance to hang with Blue and Junior.
They were a magical front line. You had to snap you fingers and pat your feet when they played. Blue was one of the nicest and most modest guys I knew.
I miss him.

Re: Blue Mitchell

Blue came to Baltimore at the Famous Ball room and held court with all the young trumpet players. What a gentleman. He gave advice to anybody who would listen. What a great player

I first saw BLUE around the fall of 1963 in NYC and at that time he led his own small combo.

I was told that lots of great things happened in Philly especially around the 1953-54 period when Ike Quebec arrived in town and arranged for Mr.Clifford Brown to join Mr.Blakey's Quintet that included Mr.Silver.
Some 55 years later, the wonderful and stellar soloists that emerged from the Blakey/Silver combos are too numerous to mention.

Did I hear some Moanin' .

The Inner Harbor was alive some months ago during my last visit and I don't know if crab cakes are included in your diet as there is a nice joint on the Harbor named PHILLIPS where the food ain't bad and within walking distance of the hotels/stadiums.

The place wasn't the same after Earl Monroe left B/More for NYC :)
