I played in the house band at Philadelphia's Uptown Theater. I got a chance to play ALL the acts that now available on Golden Oldies compilation CD's
I loved playing Joe Tex act because you never knew what he was going to do.
Joe was an ex-paratrooper. One afternoon Joe jumped off stage, this was not unusual he did this almost every show. He used to climb out of the pit and run around the theater............ ah the good old days Joe did something different during one engagement, Joe jumped into the pit. He exited the pit through the door and ran upstairs, left the theater and ran around the block. Joe enter the theater and went to the balcony. On a spotlight cue, Joe jumped on the railing of the balcony........and jumped There were screams from the audience........Joe liked the reaction so much that he kept it in for the run of the engagement.

A few years ago, I got a call to play on a Mary J Blige album. I didn't know anything about here.
Virgil Jones and Darryl Shaw were the other trumpet players. Frank Wess was there in the reed section. It was like the old days.
We put the headphones on..........there was stuff vocally going on that was unbelievable! We, the horns, tried our best but it just wasn't working.
Frank, in that voice of his yelled ........"Get that b***h out of the cans" Well, we were on the floor. At the back of the studio, SONY I think, a door opened and a glaring woman stormed out of the studio. Guess who
I haven't worked for her since.

Re: Disco!

Wilmer,

Thanks for posting that. It was a great lifter for late afternoon in the office.
Regardless of the crap I'm reading... it's ALL great !!

I'm with Wilmer and a few others.... it's ART... if it moves one soul to be joyous then it's very much worth it!

Liten, we are musicians... we should support all kinds of music... I said "support"... you don't have to like it!

I bet those guys loved playing those parts...

If I could fulfill any dream / fantasy, it would NOT be playing with the CSO... (although I love classical music)... it would be to play with EWF, Gloria Estefan or a high energy group like that...

Thanks again Wilmer.

Mr. Wise, regarding Joe Tex, was playing "Skinny Legs and All" fun to play? Please excuse me if I got the name of the title wrong.

You have the right title. Joe was fun to watch and work with. He was a master mike juggler.

Re: Disco!

Wow. Thanks for the video. Somewhere I have a CD or two of Mr. Tex's. I used to love to listen to "Hold On to What You've Got." To me, it's a beautiful song.
