Man! Some of this stuff was straight-up BUBBLE GUM, But Freddie was still blowing down the house on them.

One of my all time favorites is his take on MISTY from his SWEET RETURN session.

FREDDIE!!
It seemed like the thing to do at the time
That record Freddie did with Claus Ogerman has some really spectacular moments.

It's damn if you do,damn if you don't .
After leaving NYC during the summer of 1966 to fulfill my Army obligation,I returned to the belly of the beast in March 1971 to find most of the boppers were recording with non-traditional labels.
Freddie among others were in the that "damn if he do,damn if he don't [catch 22] " limbo as he and many others were criticized for recording with CTI which at the time was considered too commercial.
The man did what most American Capitalists did or would do - he followed the money trail.
Had he bypass COLUMBIA and gone directly to ATLANTIC,the cry would be the same.

It's unfortunate Herbie Mann is not around to describe where he made the most money from a recording in 1975, titled: DISCOTHEQUE.

By the way,the trumpet section on Windjammer are: Jon Faddis;Marvin Stamm;Bernie Glow;Lew Soloff. - I suppose one can blame the producer,Bob James for not puttings together :)

By 1971 Mr.Hubbard's name was already etched in the Trumpeters Hall of Fame and had he quit playing after recording Maiden Voyage with Herbie Hancock in May 1965, I for one would be trumpeting his stellar contributions to this thing we love and call jazz.
Like Lee Morgan,he damn sure enriched and excited my life when I came of age to follow their careers.

Long Live BOP and the Boppers !

Re: Freddie Hubbard

Freddie said the label told him that if he did those sessions, they guarantee he'd be living in a house Beverly Hills with a pool in the back yard. Plus it'd make him Jazz Trumpeter of the year in the jazz poles...... I'd be danmed if he did get that house!!

Re: Freddie Hubbard

Freddie played at the Basement in Sydney in about 1984. The announcer said
"Freddie Hubbard has been described as one of the greatest Jazz trumpet players of all time"
When Freddie came on stage he said
"I am not one of the greatest. You sit back and listen"
You know, after hearing him, I thought he had a point.

I can't believe Freddie would accept an oral agreement/promise from some
'EXEC' in the music biz.
Further, had that promise materialized,he could have acheived a bigger bang for his buck had he considered owning The Pyraimids @ College Park,Indianapolis rather than a home on the left coast.

No, no! It meant that he would get comercial air play on radio. They would push and promote the recordings and make him a household name, ie; Chuck Mangione, Tom Browne, Herb Alpert, Kenny G.

That commercial air play can be construed as PAYOLA and many were sent to the "BIG HOUSE" for their excesses.
Haven't heard much from the G-Man since Pat Metheny took him to task.
In parting, every era has what is called a "flash in the pan" player.
Perhaps you are too young to remember when Ace Cannon and Boots Randolph were the talk of the town (small town) America.

I contribute a dollar a day ($365.00 [$366.00 this year] ) to WQED Public Television Station and every Saturday evening here in Pittsburgh,Pa they feature Lawrence Welk's Band, and the only musician of note I can name
from that band is Pete Fontain.

Maybe it's a generation or two difference but Thad Jones assembled one of the best big band,in my lifetime,to date.
