Much of it brings back memories of my family in Bensonhurst & Little Italy, NY, where I spent a lot o my youth. Ahhhhhh, the characters, the food, the song........ there was never a safer place to live, BTW...

gregc
Hey Greg, another fellow Bensonhurst person here. I share your sentiment and memories. The Godfather brought a lot of the little cultural things we grew up with to the big screen. I still love the movie. My dad made me play all fo the trumpet stuff from the Godfather before he would shell out the clams for my first trumpet. Needless to say, once he made that offer, I had it all learned immediately. LOL. To this day I still play it now and again.....just as a trip down amnesia lane. LOL.

RG111 is an unknown quantity at this point
I had always heard that it was Gil Johnson. I watch it every time it's on TV just to hear that opening solo!

Jimmy Maxwell did indeed play it - Uan Rasey played the solo in Chinatown (I've gotten these two confused once or twice too)

Alex,
South Philadelphia was Bensonhurst, Philly style.
Everyone's name ended with a vowel. My first teacher Antonino DelCampo, was friendly with Frankie( Avalonne)Avalone's manager. He sat through one of my lessons. Mario Lanza was a DelCampo student. I played in groups with the Genovese family........the musicians, not the crime family
I did some work over at the Cameo-Parkway studios. That's where Fabian, Chubby Checker, Jimmy Darren,Frankie Avalon and many others recorded in the 50s and 60s before Sigma Sound took over the studio scene.

I can hear that melody now, thank goodness Jimmy didn't play it on his bagpipes

Indeed. And we were discussing the beautiful Jimmy Maxwell playing at the beginning of the movie, but how about the guy practicing trumpet in the scene where Don Corleone gets shot?
