I just transcribed The Godfather Waltz. It's been on my mind since this thread started and then it came on late night TV 2 nights ago. Of course, that had me up till 1:30 AM. The next day, when I came home from work I finally wrote it up.
What a cool, haunting waltz~

yeah what is up with that? I've always wondered whether there was some interesting story behind it, or whether someone just happened to be practicing nearby when they shot the scene, or what...

Wilmer, tell me you know something about this (and, a happy birthday to you!)

I assume that was just put in for atmosphere. If you think about it, it's a relatively inexpensive way to give the feeling of being in a working class neighborhood of that erea while filming on a backlot.

Specifically the "Godfather Waltz" which starts with the solo trumpet playing the theme.

Thanks,

I have heard the Jimmy Maxwell was the trumpet soloist.

When I studied with Jimmy Maxwell in the late 70's, he told me that it was indeed him playing that solo.

Bensonhurst

Back in the 60's and 70's Bensonhurst was great, I lived in NJ but spent a lot of time there. we had a rehersal band that played out at Brooklyn College.........lots of good players, Dominick Aloy, Jimmy Calaruso, Jimmy Campbell, Gary and Glenn Pribek, etc. I remember playing at some joints over on 86th street too.

Robert Rowe is on a distinguished road
As a "side bar" ... (and being a Mando player), studio ace (guitar) Tommy Tedesco played the Mandolin on the Godfather theme. Used to drive me "nuts" trying to play it the way he did, until I learned he only knew how to play the Mandolin strung and tuned (octave higher) like a guitar (E-A-D-G-B-E), instead of the standard Mando tuning of D-G-A-E.

It worked, though (for him).

I learned how to play "Maggie May" without a hitch; thankfully Tommy didn't record that one!

Is it just me, or the GODFATHER theme sounds like Don Pasquale?
