Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

Wilmer,
I should have you come talk to my kids at school. I make them write in music not other stuff like fingerings.

Some of my trombone players think a scale is 1,2,3 etc.

My favorite (aka I despise with a burning passion ) is the fingerings that are written, and are wrong. by being a half step off.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

I Play in a blues band, so just HAVING music is a luxury :>) That said, notes should always be in pencil, and fingerings are for beginners.

If you want to get good at transposition, just play with guitar players. They love E which puts us in F#, B which puts us in Db, and so on....

Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

The best music is written with pencils. There is nothing wrong with marking music, if you do it in a way that is removable. Especially for the gigs with only one rehearsal, markings make certain things much more predictable. At the end of the gig, you just need to take the time and erase the evidence!

And I have seen scores that had so much highlighter on it that it was more colourful than a christmas tree...

As for writing the fingering, I think it is a bad habit. When I stated playing the trumpet (recently), I decided to learn my fingering rather than write it... That's not that hard actually.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

the first thing i do when i get a rental part is take the eraser to it (other then things like the cue marks for what instruments come in at a rehearsal number). It makes for a lot cleaner part when starting.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

Last night was the second rehearsal with full ORch.
Someone had changed an 8 measure rest to 6. I came in 2 measures early and mantained it to the end. I erased the pencil. The conductor forgave me.

I loaned the trombone player a pencil. He marked his music as expected and I informed him that he has to erase it after the last show. He said, "no I don't." I said, "yes you will."

Some things are not taught in high school orchestra. I will teach it.

Incidentally, none of the adults, except me, had practiced their parts. It was such a poor example I had to restrain myself.
