Okay, fun question:

What is the ironic similarity regarding the keys of the Brahms and Schumann symphonies?

Yay!!! Music trivia!!! Ok... time to get the Norton scores out. Just a minute, now...Brahms and Schumann...they would be Vol. II...crumbs...no Brahms symphonies there. Excerpt books....

* Ok. Brahms 1: says trumpet in H, so it's in Bb (I hope...or it's for trumpets in B natural! And I've been playing it wrong!). 2 says trumpet in D, so in D; 3 says trumpet in F, so F (hmmm...major triad going on here)...but 4 says E; a tritone from 1. Ok. Schumann...number 1 in Bb; 2 in c...3 ahhh, I get it! First five notes of a Bb scale, but what's the #4 about, Mr. Brahms?*

Hah Hah! Just realized this after I posted! Sharp 4...number four...if you abbreviate and use the symbol they look the same...Brahms, you sly devil, you. All pivoting around 5...the five wounds...the figure 5...you guys...hah. What a world.

Isn't it European or "Old World" notation rather than British?? :)

American or "New World" is like a mathematical exercise.. where is the "art" in that?????

Rubato 8th notes, (8th implies they are all the same... )eh? how does that work? Rubato quavers.. yeah that makes sense..

only having a laugh folks!

But on a more serious note...

Math measures the world; science explains the world; music reflects our world by combining the 2 (yes, and then some) in a meaningful and thoughtful way. There are mathematical relations all over the place in both art and nature. Just examine the theory of key signiatures or an overtone series. Study the way a galaxy is formed; or the way waves and hurricanes expand; or the relationship between your bellybutton and your nose or the growth of a conch shell...they are all similar.

I was never so fully aware of those relationships as when I began to really dig in and try to understand what a fibonacci series is. It's really quite amazing.

Hmm... ironic... I'll have to think about that one.

Another fun one I've always been fascinated by: if you take they keys of Brahms's four symphonies and put 'em together, you are left with a four note theme. In what well-known symphony by an equally well-known composer is that exact theme found?

Good try, but not quite. You are approaching the right era though. and we need a specific symphony too.
