I would choose either Manny or Wynton.

Why? Well not only are they both phenomenal trumpeters, but they also both seem to know exectly how they accomplish their goals, rather than just being great musicians who find it so easy they never had to think about how to do it. They are also both wonderful people, with whom I feel sure I would find great friendship. I think it is very important to have a good relationship with a teacher.

That was Dr. William Fielder. Bill was a student of Vince Cichowicz and Bud Herseth. He was one of Wynton's earliest teachers. Did you know that Bill played with the Sun Ra band

Wow -- when did Wm Fielder play with Sun Ra?

That reminds me -- what do you know about Hobart Dotson, who played with Sun Ra in the late 50s/early 60? I only know him from the Sun Ra albums of the time. Always thought he had a beautiful, full sound and a thoughtful approach.

Hobart introduced me to Bill Fielder. I don't remember the year. They were with the Slide Hampton band. i worked with Hobart a few times. The last time was with the singer, Damita Jo. If the name seems familiar, it is because it is Janet Jackson's middle names Hobart was a monster lead player. Here is a discography for Hobart.

Bill Fielder played with Sun Ra in Chicago in the fifties. Here is a reference.

Bill is a magnificent teacher and a great human.

The great Jimmy Owens! And I am lucky enough to study with him. Jimmy is one of the nicest, sweetest guys around, and one of the most knowledgable and talented players around as well! And . . . he kicks your butt at every lesson.

Cheers,
Spitty

Wynton Marsalis (like you guys didn't know his last name....LOL)
I once heard a story where someone said that they wouldn't want to be taught by Wynton Marsalis - they wanted to be taught by the person who taught Wynton!
Wynton studied with a lot of different people in high school, but I think his main teacher was George Jansen, who studied with Vacchiano.
Didn't Wynton study with Bill Fielder and then Vacchiano?
Yes he did study with Prof. Bill Fielder. Wynton was introduced to the Picc Trumpet and trumpet fundementals by Prof Fielder thats why after 2 years with Vacchiano Wynton was able to go on the road with Art Blakey and swing.
