I'm Back!

I Have been at NCCU for the last few days filling in for Bill Fielder.
NAJRI: NCCU AAJC Research Institute
It was an amazing event. Tootie and Jimmy, Dr. Billy Taylor, Dr. Larry Ridley, Cedar Walton and Wes Anderson were all in attendance. It was a blast working with the young trumpet players of the NCCU band.
Jazz lives in North Carolina!

That's great news O Wise One.
I see it took a 'Warm Daddy' from Brooklyn and some Heath's to restore life into America's only original art form down yonder.

Since you raised Jimmy's name,on April 11,2008 I was invited to the local Presbyterian
Church to listen to a concert "Psalms Without Words" featuring the Presbybop Quartet of Clarks Summit PA.

It was an outstanding evening !
After the gig,I had a conversation with the bands composer and pianist,Pastor Bill Carter
about his interest in Jazz and so forth and he implored me to visit his web site
(Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quartet - Jazz to the glory of God) for some of his influences...see if you recognize THE VOICE OF THE SAXAPHONE (composer) in the penultimate picture.

Long Live Jazz !

Re: I'm Back!

David "Fathead" Newman played with the NCCU Jazz Ensemble last night.
I heard some of their rehearsals and was impressed with their playing.

I am on a record with "Fathead," "The Weapon," but I only actually met him a couple years ago.
He played alto, tenor and flute with the group. He sounded great.

Re: I'm Back!

I saw Fathead in a very small jazz club in Toronto last year. It was an excellent show, and the line up for the second set went down the block.

Fathead was the headliner at the Savannah Jazz Fest september 2007 which was the first year I took my kiddies there, we were the opening act that final day. Randy Weston played too, and we did my arrangement of one of tunes, Tanjah; he told me that we were the only band he'd ever heard who did that tune besides us. It was a stellar night. Fathead played only tenor, and he killed.
