I was the trumpet player in the 1987 Broadway production of "Into the Woods."
I played all those strange fanfares and I got to know that show pretty well.
Imagine my surprise, when I got a call to play the show for the first time in many years, at all the new fanfares and trumpet cues. I played the show with no rehearsal, I don't recommend this. I had played the show hundreds of times and this show seemed different........... it was different It had some of the stuff from the London production. It was different, but very good. I have a recollection that Noel Langley/Lonely Angel played the show in London.
I had a great time playing the show......but the piccolo trumpet part was gone

Hi Wilmer,

You mentioned earlier the original was written for C trumpet for you. Was the new part you played on C trumpet?

I think Sondheim wrote some of the finest shows out there. "Into the Woods" is fantastic. I would love to play that show some time.

Did the original part indicate piccolo? I was a ringer on a college production a few years ago and it never mentioned piccolo, but I used it for the fanfares anyways. I really enjoyed that one. Did you also play on the recording?

I was the original player on Broadway. I did the cast album. The part was written in C and I had a piccolo trumpet double. The part I recently played indicated piccolo trumpet on the cover, but there were no parts in the book for the horn. On Broadway, I played the piccolo only on one cue, the fanfares were all done on the C trumpet.

I just finished a week show with a local choral group who did "No One is Alone" as a selection from that show. Gorgeous. It reminded me again about this wonderful show. I played it years ago (another local production) and had such fond memories of the show and music. I "do" remember listening to the cast album and thinking how terrific the trumpet player was.... Nice work, sir.

I can still hear that recurring tpt line/fanfare in my head!

Thanks for sharing that story. I'll bet that was quite a shocker to see revamped parts. ha.
