Lead Examples

Hi Wilmer,

I would like your thoughts on great recorded examples of lead playing. I have been told Snooky on Atomic Basie is pretty hard to beat, what do you think? Are there any other prominent examples you would suggest?

Thanks,

HornBoy

Anyone else, please feel free to chime in with your thoughts. I didn't mean this as a specific question to Wilmer!

Two that I would recommend are newer Basie CD's

Mike Williams on lead trumpet on

SWING SHIFT, directed by Grover Mitchell

and

COUNT BASIE--LIVE AT EL MOROCCO, directed by Frank Foster.

Mike does a GREAT job on these.

Renauld Jones also played great with Basie. Check out Jonsey on the April in Paris album. On the Miles Davis-Gil Evans albums Ernie and Bernie play lead. The Monk at Carnagie Hall album is classic Ernie. Victor Paz is a personal favorite. His work with Eddie Palmieri and the Fania All-Stars is legendary.Do an allmusic.com search on these guys and you will be blown away. Tommy Stevenson with the Lunceford band, Al Killian with Duke were amazing players and are almost unknown.
I will make a list of my favorites. I am only getting started........I have to go.
I'll be Bach

Totally agree, and you can't listen to enough Benny Bailey!! Any of those classic Clarke-Boland Big Band records are just solid gold to me! Quincy Jones back in the early 60's!! What a trumpet sound and style.....

Let me add the greatest L.A. Lead player of his generation, George Graham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

George had THE sound everybody else was looking for. You heard George play high and you swear he was only playing high C's when it was G's!! He played so effortlessly.....

The Bob Florence Band sounded very different when he played Lead. He was their sound.
