Marlboro Trumpet Section

Wilmer,

I know that you sent me this photo not too long ago, but I purchased a book called Espressivo, Music and Life at Marlboro yesterday and found the same picture plus lots of other great images. I really got a nice feel for the flavor of this place through the photos in this book. I can only imagine how great all of the ensembles must have sounded!

Marlboro Trumpet Section
Louis Opalesky, Wilmer Wise, Henry Nowak

I smiled when I got to this one:

James Levine and Van Cliburn at the Piano

That picture was taken in 1966, I think, at the recording sessions for the Bach Suites. Hank was playing a funky Couesnon piccolo, I used a Bach with an A gizmo. Lou played a C trumpet. Casals wanted the trumpets to shimmer, not blare. It is a very different approach to the work.

Wilmer,

The text below the picture in the book did show that it was taken in 1966. Thanks for the details on the horns. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a long bell piccolo like the one that you’re playing. It’s certainly impressive!

I’m moving this over form the original folder where I had this information. It definitely belongs here.

Re: Marlboro Trumpet Section

Derek!

I found a name in that list:

Summer 1977 - Henry Nowak, Louis Opalesky, Wilmer Wise
.....Bach B Minor Mass (1977) - Stig Ridqvist

Could Stig Ridqvist actually be the swedish trumpeter Stig Rydqvist?

All the best!

Re: Marlboro Trumpet Section

Wow, caught some familiar names on that list.
Howard Birnbaum lives a few blocks away from me in Teaneck. He played in my teacher Bruce Engel's quintet. Than we played together in the Lynn Oliver band. We also ran into each other all the time taking lessons with Murray Karpilovsky. A sweetheart. Now we see each other at the Kosher Deli.
And Mary Hastings is another teacher of mine on that list. She rescued my embouchure, plain and simple. James Donato was guest soloist when I was in the Brooklyn College Wind Ensemble. Beautiful player.
That's the beauty of NYC. You can be an unknown player, and still get to rub elbows (or bumpers) with the best players in town.

Re: Marlboro Trumpet Section

Driving in Brooklyn can be dangerous when certain TM members are on the road. I got a crash course on Glenwood Road one winter day
It was our first meeting
