Re: Maurice Murphy

It was about time I am amazed how little age seemed to affect his playing. Wish to all TMers to have such a long artistic life....

Re: Maurice Murphy

Am listening to the podcast now Wilmer.

Thanks loads for posting!

"I'm just another trumpet player who's been extremely lucky I think." My, it's no nice to see someone like Mr. Murphy say something like that.

Also, nice anecdote about Bernstein and Candide and whether to play a passage muted or no.

Re: Maurice Murphy

Wilmer,

As the LSO points out, Maurice truly is a legendary figure.

I'm disappointed by the way people are constantly being compared in contemporary society (is LeBron as good as Michael was at the same point in his career?, etc.) but I've always felt that Maurice had few, if any, peers as an orchestral trumpeter. . . a Hersethlike presence onstage (there, I did it too. Bad EC).

It takes years to develop that presence and I'm sure that he will be sorely missed by audience and colleagues alike. Young conductors, however, are probably breathing a sigh of relief!

Cheers, mate
EC

If Mr.Murphy were a Bopper, his retirement announcement would be in conflict with remarks made by Cannonball's younger brother:

"I never heard of a jazz musician who retired. You love what you do,so if you retire, what are you going to do,play for the walls ?" - Nat Adderley

This is just idle chit-chat by young folks who never saw the likes of a
Connie Hawkins or a Julius Erving.
In my world, basketball is synonymous with jazz and LeBron is a young turk
gaining acceptance and not yet a complete player like Scotty Pippin.
Michael J was in the Lee Morgan /Freddie Hubbard class and that's the class
that cooked with high heat and those who looked into the pot got burned.

I'm sure the former starting power forward from Barrett Junior High School in South Philadelphia would concur with my analogy
