Re: Mingus

HaPPy Birthday Charles Mingus! Thanks for the tip about WKCR Wilmer! I can't get that station where I live anymore, but it's off to my CD collection! Personally dig all of Mingus' periods and ensembles, but I have a special place in my heart for the line up of Adams, Pullen, Walrath with Dannie on Drums with Charles. Probably because I heard them live in Boston. Checking out "Changes I and II" presently.........
Peace,

Re: Mingus

Mingus is great. My jazz band played haitian fight song and it was a lot of fun. His music is just awesome.

Re: Mingus

I've always made my kiddies play a lot of Mingus, Peggy's Blue Skylight, Haitian Fight Song, Canon, Self Portrait in Three Colors. This year we've added Remember Rockefeller at Attica, a rollicking 51 measure tune from Changes One. That, Chinoiserie by Ellington, a bossa version of Giant Steps and Oscar Pettiford's Tricotism have been in heavy rotation this year.

Re: Mingus

How do you teach them canon? Its a really great tune from a not so popular mingus album, but its so cool.
Off of Mingus Moves, my favorite tune is actually Wee, which is a Sy Johnson tune.
