I stop over here occasionally to see what everyone is talking about but haven’t ever posted. I remembered this conversation came up recently at TH. MrClean, who played in the Eastman Wind Ensemble when this recording was made, provided the answer to this question. Have a look at his response in this link.

Rafael Mendez is the original trumpet performer of the Moto Perpetuo. The piece intends for both circular breathing AND double tonguing for that entire 4 minutes—without interruption (studio trickery claims are hearsay anyway). ;)

If you guys are really impressed by Wynton's recording of the Moto Perpetuo, find the one done by Rafael Mendez. An important distinction is that Wynton slurs the piece, while Mendez actually double tongues his way through.

I think Sergei Nakariakov also has a recording out of the Moto, and some say that it takes the cake. I don't know if Allen Vizzutti has recorded it, though he's undoubtedly capable and this kinda piece is right up his ally.

Anyway, that's my little input.

Is this a landmark piece of music or just a tuneful display of fiddle wizardry? Is the piece Pops concert material?
Did Heifetz or Milstein play this work with a straight face? We trumpet players, haven't got the right perspective on the Paganini

I cannot hear Wynton take a breath on this on Carnaval. Did he do it on one breath or did he 'sneak' one in? If he did it on one breath this is astonishing, even if he didn't it still an amazing piece of playing. Like Cichowicz at 78.

For the younger guys and girls on this forum get this album. Mr Marsalis's playing is par excellence and showcases a great tradition of American cornet players. The older guys and girls should of course have it!!

Trevor
Wynton is awesome, and I'm pretty sure all his stuff is unedited, b/c I can hear some stuff on that Carnival CD that I'm sure he would rather have changed for the recording. He can circular breath and I'm sure he did on this song, esp as this is the one where it would be best shown off. That CD isn't exactly about culture: it's more about showing off what a (real) trumpet player (cornet; whatever ) can do.

If you go to this link and click on Rafael Mendez there is a 40 second video of him playing the Mexican Hat Dance in one breath. Also there is a sound clip of him playing the MotoP with double tounging and Circular breathing. Really cool to listen to.

Well, if I could play like Wynton (Marsalis), I wouldn't play like Wynton.

Niccolò Paganini

Paganini, the composer of Moto Perpetuo, was a master violinist. I strongly suggest listening to a violin version of the work. Perlman, Heifetz or any of today's virtuosi are good role models.
